COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. (TDR) — A massive law enforcement response unfolded Thursday in Colorado after two illegal immigrants allegedly attempted to run over Immigration and Customs Enforcement officers during a targeted operation near Colorado Springs.

The incident began during an ICE operation at a construction site in the Black Forest area. According to ICE officials, two suspects in a vehicle attempted to ram into agents from the agency’s Denver office. In response, one ICE officer fired three shots at the vehicle in what officials described as an act of self-defense.

“Two criminal aliens attempted to ram their vehicle into ICE officers during a targeted enforcement operation in Colorado Springs, Colorado, July 31,” an ICE spokesperson said.

“As a result of their violent actions and to protect the officers and agents onsite, an officer fired three shots into the vehicle.”

The vehicle was later found abandoned, and the suspects remain at large. ICE has not released their names or further identifying information.

The El Paso County Sheriff’s Office quickly joined forces with the Department of Homeland Security and ICE to track the suspects. A containment zone was established, and deputies swarmed the area with support from drones, school resource officers, and community service specialists.

According to The Gazette, a local Colorado Springs news outlet, at least two dozen unmarked vehicles were seen blocking off access points in the heavily wooded region. A shelter-in-place order was issued around 10:30 a.m. for the 9900 block of Burgess Road and remained in effect until approximately 6 p.m.

Door-to-door welfare checks were conducted to ensure residents’ safety, while overhead drones searched for any sign of the suspects.

The FBI has taken over the federal investigation, confirming Thursday that it is pursuing potential charges related to an assault on a federal officer.

“FBI Denver is investigating an alleged assault on a federal officer that occurred in El Paso County, Colo. earlier today,” the bureau told Fox 21.

“As this is an ongoing investigation, we do not have any further information to provide at this time.”

ICE also pointed to a broader trend of violence against its officers, stating that assaults have risen 830% and blaming the spike on anti-ICE rhetoric from Democratic lawmakers.
