- The Smithsonian removed a display on Trump’s two impeachments from the National Museum of American History, citing it as a temporary update pending further review. This follows scrutiny over political bias in publicly funded institutions and a Trump-era order targeting “divisive” content. Displays on other presidential impeachments remain, with plans to include all in the future.
WASHINGTON, D.C. (TDR) — Amid growing scrutiny from the Trump administration over left-wing political bias in publicly funded institutions, the Smithsonian Institution has quietly removed a display about President Donald Trump’s historic two impeachments from its American Presidency exhibit at the National Museum of American History.
The removal, described as temporary by Smithsonian spokesman Phillip Zimmerman, follows a July internal review of “legacy content” and an executive order issued by President Trump in March targeting taxpayer-funded projects deemed “divisive” or “ideologically inconsistent” with federal policy. While displays for Andrew Johnson and Bill Clinton remain intact—as does a feature on Richard Nixon’s resignation—the updated Trump impeachment panels have been pulled pending further evaluation.
“The installation added in September 2021 was intended to be a short-term measure to address current events at the time,” Zimmerman said.
“The broader exhibit will eventually include all presidential impeachments.”

Originally fast-tracked into the exhibit during the Biden administration, the Trump panels covered his two impeachments—first in 2019 over a phone call with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy regarding Hunter Biden’s involvement with Burisma, and again in 2021 following the January 6 Capitol breach. While House Democrats, led both times by former Speaker Nancy Pelosi, succeeded in impeaching Trump, he was twice acquitted by the Senate.
Those episodes took on new light in December 2024, when outgoing President Biden controversially issued a blanket pardon for his son, Hunter—effectively validating claims of corrupt foreign influence that had once been dismissed as politically motivated.
President Trump, returning to office after his decisive 2024 victory, has made reforming public institutions a signature focus. In March, he issued the executive order “Restoring Truth and Sanity to American History,” assigning Vice President J.D. Vance to oversee a purge of federal grants supporting exhibits or programs that “degrade shared American values, divide Americans based on race, or promote ideologies inconsistent with Federal law.”

The Smithsonian’s move follows closely on the heels of the Corporation for Public Broadcasting’s announcement that it would cease operations after losing $1.1 billion in funding under the recently passed Rescissions Act. That law, backed by President Trump and signed on July 4, clawed back over $9 billion in what Republicans called “partisan excesses” in non-essential spending.
“Despite the extraordinary efforts of millions of Americans… we now face the difficult reality of closing our operations,” said CPB CEO Patricia Harrison.
The CPB’s closure and the Smithsonian’s exhibit rollback mark a watershed moment in the cultural realignment ushered in by Trump’s second term. Conservatives have long argued that institutions like NPR, PBS, and the Smithsonian have drifted far from neutrality, using taxpayer dollars to push progressive narratives under the guise of public education.
Not surprisingly, the Left is crying foul. NPR President Katherine Maher denounced the budget cuts and museum actions as politically motivated retaliation.
“Parents and children, senior citizens and students, tribal and rural communities—all will bear the harm of this vote,” she said in response to CPB’s defunding.
With public trust in American institutions at a low ebb, will these changes bring balance—or simply fuel another culture war front?
