DALLAS, Texas (TDR) — A dawn shooting outside a U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement facility in Dallas rattled the city Wednesday, leaving detainees dead and wounded, a sniper dead from a self-inflicted gunshot wound, and law enforcement racing to secure the scene. The violence underscores growing concerns about targeted attacks against federal officers and facilities, drawing swift condemnation from Washington officials and Texas lawmakers alike.

Chaos Outside the Facility

The gunfire erupted around 6:40 a.m. at the ICE detention center located off I-35E near Empire Central. According to Dallas Police, a suspect opened fire on the government building from the roof of an adjacent structure. Officers arriving on scene discovered multiple victims suffering from gunshot wounds. While early reports indicated three were wounded, federal officials later confirmed at least two detainees had died. A third victim remains hospitalized in critical condition. No ICE agents or local police were injured in the attack.

Footage from the scene showed dozens of emergency vehicles, including armored units, crowding the freeway and surrounding area as officers scrambled to secure the facility. Helicopters circled overhead, while FBI agents were dispatched to assist in the investigation.

Shooter Found Dead

Dallas’ Fox 4 reported that the suspected gunman, armed with a rifle, was discovered dead on the rooftop from what authorities believe was a self-inflicted gunshot wound. Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem confirmed the detail in a statement posted to social media, where she urged Americans to recognize the mounting threats faced by immigration officers.

“The shooter is deceased by a self-inflicted gunshot wound. While we don’t know motive yet, we know that our ICE law enforcement is facing unprecedented violence against them. It must stop,” Noem wrote.

Dallas Police issued a brief update confirming the suspect’s death and acknowledging that one victim died at the scene. Two others were rushed to area hospitals, where officials say their conditions remain critical.

The attack drew immediate responses from political leaders. Vice President JD Vance denounced what he described as an “obsessive attack” on law enforcement, writing, “The obsessive attack on law enforcement, particularly ICE, must stop. I’m praying for everyone hurt in this attack and for their families.”

Sen. Ted Cruz (R-TX) echoed the call for prayers, noting, “My team and I are closely monitoring the situation at the ICE Detention Facility in Dallas. We are praying for the swift recovery of those injured, and we are deeply grateful to the brave first responders who rushed to the scene.”

Meanwhile, Fox News reporters Lawrence Jones and Griff Jenkins, citing law enforcement sources, reported that the gunfire began as ICE agents were unloading migrants from a transport bus.

Ongoing Investigation

Authorities have not yet provided details about the shooter’s identity or possible motive. Dallas Police said the investigation is ongoing and promised a formal media briefing later in the day. The FBI and Department of Homeland Security are both expected to play central roles as investigators piece together what led to the early morning violence.

The attack highlights a troubling trend: escalating threats and hostility directed toward immigration enforcement officers and facilities nationwide. As investigators probe for motive, officials warn that deterrence and security around such facilities will likely be under renewed scrutiny.

Will this tragic act of violence spark a broader debate over the safety of federal law enforcement and detainees alike?
