- Utah Gov. Spencer Cox confirmed suspected shooter Tyler Robinson is refusing to cooperate with investigators probing Charlie Kirk’s assassination.
- Authorities reconstructed the sniper-style killing with forensic evidence, video, and bullet inscriptions carrying cryptic and mocking messages.
- Discord chats show Robinson downplayed his resemblance to the wanted suspect, while friends joked about the shooting before his arrest.
SALT LAKE CITY, Utah (TDR) — Utah Gov. Spencer Cox disclosed Sunday that the alleged assassin of conservative activist Charlie Kirk is stonewalling investigators. Speaking on ABC’s “This Week,” Cox said Tyler Robinson has not confessed and remains uncooperative despite overwhelming evidence. “He is not cooperating, but all the people around him are cooperating. And I think that’s very important,” Cox explained, underscoring the cooperation of Robinson’s family and friends.
A Calculated Killing
Kirk was fatally shot in the neck during a public debate at Utah Valley University last Wednesday. Authorities say the fatal round was fired from the rooftop of a building about 142 yards away, a sniper-style strike that stunned both supporters and critics of the 31-year-old political firebrand. Forensic teams reconstructed the attack through abandoned weapon evidence, blurry rooftop footage, and inscribed ammunition recovered from the scene.
Investigators say Robinson was wearing clothing that matched the suspect in surveillance video: a maroon t-shirt, light-colored shorts, a black hat with a white logo, and light sneakers. A bolt-action rifle fitted with a scope was recovered from woodland, along with bullet casings carrying bizarre inscriptions such as “Hey fascist! Catch!” and “O bella ciao, bella ciao.” Another read mockingly: “If you read this you are gay lmao.”

The taunting inscriptions have fueled speculation about Robinson’s mindset, but officials maintain that a clear motive has not yet been established.
Online Activity Raises Questions
Even as the manhunt consumed headlines, Robinson allegedly engaged online in a cavalier manner. According to communications reviewed by investigators, members of a Discord group tagged Robinson after noticing the uncanny resemblance between his photo and the fugitive shooter. One participant typed “wya 💀” — shorthand for “where you at” paired with a skull emoji. Robinson replied that the suspect was his “doppelganger” trying “to get me in trouble.”
Another group member joked: “Tyler killed Charlie!!!” The messages were exchanged just 36 hours before Robinson’s arrest in Washington, Utah. A high school acquaintance who shared the chat logs with the media said Robinson had not been seen in person for years, but remained active in the group of roughly 20 participants.
The online exchanges, obtained by The New York Times, provide an unsettling glimpse into the suspect’s apparent detachment from the gravity of Kirk’s death.
Discord Defends Platform

The revelations prompted questions about whether Robinson used Discord to plan or promote the attack. The company said it deleted his account after the arrest, but denied that incriminating posts originated from its platform. “These were communications between the suspect’s roommate and a friend after the shooting, where the roommate was recounting the contents of a note the suspect had left elsewhere,” a Discord spokesperson told the Associated Press.
Discord emphasized that it found “no evidence that the suspect planned this incident or promoted violence” through its services, echoing past defenses of the platform after being linked to extremist activity. The clarification suggests that while Robinson used online channels frequently, investigators are still piecing together his offline preparations and movements.
Family Cooperation, Suspect Silence
According to Cox, Robinson’s family confirmed he had become “more political” in recent years, though they offered no indication of radicalization. Federal agents cited the family’s openness as critical to the rapid conclusion of the high-profile manhunt. Still, Robinson’s refusal to cooperate stands in sharp contrast to relatives’ willingness to assist.
The FBI continues to analyze the weapon, casings, and communications in search of evidence that might establish motive. Officials also stressed the need to separate the killer’s online banter from verified planning. “We will not speculate until the investigation is complete,” one senior agent said.
National Fallout
The killing of Kirk, a conservative power broker and outspoken Christian nationalist, has reignited debates over political violence, social media radicalization, and security at public events. President Donald Trump called Kirk a martyr and ordered flags at half-staff, while critics warned against inflaming tensions further.
Robinson’s behavior — mocking suspicions online while under pursuit — has been described as chillingly nonchalant. The inscriptions on his ammunition, at once political and juvenile, underscore the difficulty in categorizing his intent. Was he motivated by ideology, nihilism, or a blend of both?
For now, the alleged assassin remains silent in custody, leaving only cryptic bullets, discarded weapons, and digital banter as pieces of the puzzle.
Will Robinson’s silence delay answers about motive — or will evidence alone reveal why Charlie Kirk was gunned down in Utah?
