LISBON, Portugal (TDR) — Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa, Portugal’s president, startled audiences this week when he appeared in person at a Portugal Socialist Party Summer University event despite being scheduled to join by video. But the real shock came from his remarks about President Donald Trump and his relationship with Russia.
“The top leader of the world’s foremost superpower is, objectively, a Soviet or Russian asset,” de Sousa said during a panel titled The President’s Responses. “He operates as an asset.”

De Sousa clarified that he was not suggesting Trump is literally a Russian agent but argued that “objectively, the new American leadership has strategically benefited the Russian Federation.” He described Washington as shifting from ally to “referee” in global contests with Moscow. His remarks followed the high-profile Russia–United States Summit in Anchorage, Alaska, on Aug. 15.
At that summit, Trump met with Vladimir Putin to discuss the ongoing war in Ukraine. While both leaders characterized the talks as productive, no agreement on a ceasefire was reached.
“We had an extremely productive meeting, and many points were agreed to,” Trump said, according to the Los Angeles Times. “There are just a very few that are left. Some are not that significant. One is probably the most significant, but we have a very good chance of getting there.”
First Putin Visit Since 2015
The Associated Press noted that Putin’s trip to Alaska marked his first visit to the United States since 2015 — and his first trip to any Western nation since Russia’s invasion of Ukraine in 2022. The optics of the meeting, coupled with de Sousa’s remarks, highlight how Europe continues to view Trump’s diplomacy with skepticism, even as the White House presents it as pragmatic dealmaking.
