• Trump executive order guarantees Qatar security after Israel bombed Doha targeting Hamas leaders in September attack.
  • Pro-Israel MAGA figures including Laura Loomer and Mark Levin criticized pledge, questioning why Qatar receives protection Israel lacks.
  • Order treats any attack on Qatar as threat to U.S. security, similar to NATO Article 5 guarantees.

WASHINGTON, DC (TDR) — President Donald Trump sparked fury among pro-Israel MAGA conservatives by signing an executive order guaranteeing the security of Qatar in the wake of Israel’s September bombing of the Gulf nation’s capital.

The order, dated Monday but published Wednesday, establishes an unprecedented security commitment between the United States and an Arab country. However, it has ignited a fierce backlash from Trump’s typically loyal base, particularly those who prioritize Israeli interests above other foreign policy considerations.

“Over the years, the United States and the State of Qatar have been bound together by close cooperation, shared interests, and the close relationship between our armed forces,” the executive order states. “In recognition of this history, and in light of the continuing threats to the State of Qatar posed by foreign aggression, it is the policy of the United States to guarantee the security and territorial integrity of the State of Qatar against external attack.”

Furthermore, the order declares that “the United States shall regard any armed attack on the territory, sovereignty, or critical infrastructure of the State of Qatar as a threat to the peace and security of the United States.”

The Israeli Strike That Changed Everything

The security guarantee comes three weeks after Israel conducted an unprecedented airstrike on Doha targeting Hamas leaders who were gathered in Qatar’s capital to discuss a U.S.-backed ceasefire proposal for Gaza. The September 9 attack killed several Hamas negotiators and a Qatari security officer but failed to eliminate the senior Hamas leadership it targeted.

Qatar, which has long hosted Hamas’s political office at American request to maintain communication channels, denounced the strike as “cowardly and treacherous.” Arab and Islamic leaders rallied behind Qatar at an emergency summit in Doha.

Trump, reportedly angered by the strike, forced Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu to apologize during a trilateral phone call Monday from the White House. Photos showed Trump handing Netanyahu the phone with a prepared statement expressing “deep regret” for violating Qatari sovereignty and pledging not to repeat such actions.

MAGA Backlash Erupts

The security commitment immediately triggered outrage from prominent MAGA conservatives who view Qatar as a terror sponsor due to its hosting of Hamas leadership.

Far-right commentator Laura Loomer questioned the priority given to Qatar’s security over American interests. “What about assuring our own safety from Qatar?” Loomer wrote. “Every single day, Qatar floods our country with billions of $ of funding for radical left, communist, & Islamist causes on college campuses and major institutions. Qatar also financed Iran before they tried to assassinate Trump.”

January 6 defendant attorney Marina Medvin described the order as a strategic victory for Qatari influence operations. “Terror-funding Qatar, which has been running an elaborate anti-Israel and pro-Qatar disinformation campaign in the United States, has now succeeded at being the most effective investment in foreign influence history,” Medvin stated. “The White House just pledged American lives to protect Qatar.”

Fox News host and hardcore Zionist Mark Levin posed a stark hypothetical: “If the leadership of Hamas in Qatar is killed by Israel, are we going to war with Israel?”

“Wouldn’t it have been better to condition any military defense of Qatar on some basic requirements? For example: turnover the Hamas leaders; no more funding of terrorists worldwide: no more funding of Marxist-Islamist groups in the United States. This is the bare minimum.”

Another right-wing commentator highlighted the asymmetry in American commitments. “By the way, there is no similar guarantee for Israel. American troops have never died for Israel,” they posted on X. “Are you ready to die for Qatar?”

Strategic and Political Implications

The executive order represents a remarkable diplomatic achievement for Qatar. Many Arab countries, most notably Saudi Arabia, have sought similar security guarantees from Washington for years but were denied.

“Saudi Arabia thought that to get a defense pact with the United States, it would require normalizing relations with Israel,” a former U.S. official told Axios. “Qatar managed to get a partial defense pact with the United States by getting attacked by Israel.”

Meanwhile, Netanyahu and his confidant Ron Dermer have spent years trying to secure a formal defense treaty with the United States. Instead, the Israeli strike on Doha led directly to a defense pact between Washington and Qatar — a nation with which Israel maintains strained relations.

Qatar hosts Al Udeid Air Base, the largest U.S. military installation in the Middle East, where thousands of American forces are stationed. The Biden administration had already designated Qatar as a Major Non-NATO Ally, but Trump’s order goes significantly further by pledging that the U.S. will “take all lawful and appropriate measures — including diplomatic, economic, and, if necessary, military — to defend” Qatar.

Legal Questions

Because Trump issued the guarantee via executive order rather than seeking Senate ratification as a treaty, its binding nature remains uncertain. However, experts note that similar executive agreements have carried significant weight in American foreign policy.

The order’s language mirrors NATO’s Article 5, which treats an attack on one member as an attack on all. Nevertheless, no other Arab country has received such an explicit American security commitment.

Critics within Trump’s base argue the order effectively limits Israel’s ability to target Hamas leadership in Doha, despite Netanyahu’s public apology and promise not to conduct future strikes on Qatari soil.

Broader Context

The controversy highlights growing tensions within the MAGA coalition between hardcore pro-Israel hawks and those who prioritize other strategic interests. Qatar has become increasingly important to American interests in the region, serving as a mediator in conflicts and hosting critical military infrastructure.

Despite the criticism, the order underscores Qatar’s successful diplomatic strategy. The Gulf nation managed to leverage the crisis caused by Israel’s attack into a strategic breakthrough that eluded wealthier and more powerful Arab states.

For pro-Israel conservatives, however, the order represents an uncomfortable reality: Trump’s “America First” foreign policy sometimes conflicts with unwavering support for Israeli military operations, even when those operations target a nation hosting America’s largest Middle Eastern military base.

Should the U.S. prioritize its strategic relationship with Qatar over Israel’s security operations against Hamas leaders, or does this order undermine Israeli counterterrorism efforts? Share your thoughts in the comments.
