Adame injected silicone into actress Cindyana Santangelo, 59, at the actress’ home on March 24. According to the Daily Mail, the silicone in her buttocks entered her bloodstream, which led to a fatal embolism. Santangelo was declared dead at a local hospital.
The victim had appeared in the popular 1990s sitcom “Married… with Children” among other acting credits. Her death highlighted the dangers of unlicensed cosmetic procedures performed outside medical facilities by individuals without proper training or credentials.
Defendant fled after complications began
Santangelo’s husband testified at the trial that Adame fled their Malibu home immediately after the injection when his wife began having convulsions, KTLA reports. The testimony painted a picture of panic and abandonment as the victim experienced life-threatening complications.
Prosecutors argued Adame knew the risks associated with silicone injections but proceeded anyway, operating without medical supervision or emergency protocols. The decision to flee rather than call for emergency assistance became a key element in the murder conviction.
Growing problem of illegal procedures

The case underscores a troubling trend of unlicensed individuals performing cosmetic procedures, often at significantly lower costs than licensed medical professionals. These operations frequently occur in homes or non-medical settings without proper equipment, sterile conditions, or emergency response capabilities.
Medical experts testified during the trial about the extreme dangers of silicone injections, particularly when administered by untrained practitioners. When silicone enters the bloodstream, it can travel to vital organs including the lungs and heart, causing potentially fatal embolisms.
Legal consequences and precedent
Adame’s second-degree murder conviction represents prosecutors’ successful argument that she acted with conscious disregard for human life. The practicing medicine without a license charge carried additional penalties, reflecting California’s efforts to crack down on illegal cosmetic procedures.
The 15-years-to-life sentence means Adame must serve a minimum of 15 years before becoming eligible for parole consideration. The actual time served will depend on parole board decisions and her conduct while incarcerated.
Family seeks justice and awareness
Santangelo’s family members expressed relief at the verdict and sentence, though they emphasized no punishment could bring back their loved one. They have called for increased public awareness about the dangers of unlicensed cosmetic procedures and stricter enforcement against illegal practitioners.
California law requires anyone performing medical procedures, including cosmetic injections, to hold appropriate medical licenses. Violations can result in criminal charges, particularly when procedures result in serious injury or death.
Should states impose mandatory minimum sentences for unlicensed practitioners whose cosmetic procedures result in death, or does the current legal framework adequately address these tragedies?
