• Pastor Nathan Peternel confirms Jonathan Wesley Peternel’s October arrest during emotional sermon
  • Investigators discovered over 200 files including AI-generated images and violent abuse material
  • Devices also contained explicit videos of pastor and wife, addressed publicly by Peternel

NOBLESVILLE, IN (TDR) — Pastor Nathan Peternel publicly addressed his congregation following the October arrest of his 24-year-old son Jonathan Wesley Peternel on multiple felony child sex abuse material charges. The Life Church lead pastor delivered an emotional sermon confirming the charges after Hamilton County Metro ICAC Task Force investigators executed search warrants at the family’s Pendleton residence.

Investigation Began with CyberTip

Authorities launched their investigation after receiving a CyberTip from the National Center for Missing and Exploited Children indicating Jonathan Peternel uploaded child sexual abuse material to Snapchat. The platform submitted five files showing suspected child sex abuse material involving prepubescent children, according to police statements.

Detectives obtained a search warrant for the Snapchat account and discovered additional abuse material along with evidence suggesting Peternel distributed videos to other users. Chat logs indicated the material was shared in a Snapchat group referencing convicted sex offender Sean “Diddy” Combs.

Disturbing Materials Seized

A September 10 search of the Peternel residence yielded multiple laptops, tablets, phones, and storage devices. Forensic examination uncovered more than 200 suspected child sexual abuse files described by investigators as among the worst they have encountered. The materials included sadomasochistic child abuse, images of drugged or intoxicated children being abused, violent child molestation, and photorealistic AI-generated photos of nude pregnant toddlers.

Investigators also discovered more than 50 photos and videos appearing to show Jonathan’s parents nude or engaged in intimate acts. Pastor Peternel addressed these recordings during his October 26 sermon, acknowledging that while marital intimacy is not sinful, creating such recordings may have been unwise and reflected poor choices on their part.

Nathan Peternel serves as lead pastor of Life Church, a multi-campus Assemblies of God congregation in the Indianapolis area. He co-hosts the “Jesus, Sex & Politics” podcast with Indiana Lieutenant Governor Micah Beckwith, who pastors Life Church’s Noblesville campus. The two have frequently discussed sexual morality, pornography, and child exploitation across multiple episodes.

In a 2021 episode titled “Stopping Sexual Assault and Sex Trafficking,” the co-hosts interviewed sexual assault survivors and warned parents about monitoring children’s online activity. Beckwith compared pornography’s addictive nature to cocaine during the discussion.

Legal Proceedings Underway

Jonathan Wesley Peternel faces seven felony charges including one count of child exploitation and multiple counts of possessing child sexual abuse material. He pleaded not guilty during an initial Madison County Circuit Court hearing and is being held at the Madison County Jail on $25,000 bond. A dispositional hearing is scheduled for January 16, 2026.

The Indiana National Guard confirmed Peternel serves as a Blackhawk helicopter mechanic in Shelbyville. A Guard spokesperson stated that actions attributed to him do not align with Army values or the values of the Indiana National Guard.

Pastor Peternel told his congregation that Life Church’s board convened in an emergency meeting immediately after the arrest. He confirmed the church’s parent denomination, the Assemblies of God, was contacted and remains engaged to provide guidance and oversight. The pastor emphasized that survivors in the congregation deserve love, support, and unwavering commitment to justice.

Will this case prompt megachurches to implement stronger safeguards and transparency measures around leadership accountability and child protection policies?
