- Lyndon Wiggins found guilty twice but files 13-page motion for new trial moments before life sentence
- Monique Baugh was kidnapped at fake showing and shot three times in 2019 retaliation plot
- Victim’s mother calls defense tactics “shenanigans” as family endures fourth trial proceeding
MINNEAPOLIS (TDR) — The man prosecutors say orchestrated the kidnapping and execution of a Black real estate agent is attempting to escape a life sentence after being convicted twice, filing a surprise motion for a third trial on the very day he was scheduled to be sentenced.
Lyndon Wiggins, 40, was found guilty in November for his role in the 2019 murder of Monique Baugh, a 28-year-old Minneapolis realtor and mother of two who was lured to a fake home showing and killed as part of an elaborate revenge plot against her boyfriend.

Wiggins’ defense attorney, Sarah Gad, filed a 13-page motion requesting another retrial less than an hour before her client was set to receive life in prison without parole. The judge took the motion under advisement, delaying Wiggins’ sentencing indefinitely.
Baugh’s mother, Wanda Williams Baugh, spoke outside the courthouse, expressing frustration at yet another delay in the nearly six-year quest for justice.
“You wait until the day of sentencing, you send a 13-page motion to get a new trial, right before sentencing, who does that? We just gotta wait. We gotta wait and see what the judge says. We always show up. We’re not going anywhere.”
Elaborate Plot Targeted Victim’s Boyfriend
Prosecutors say Wiggins masterminded the murder as retaliation against Baugh’s boyfriend, local rapper Jon Mitchell-Momoh. The two men had a falling out over a record label deal, and Wiggins allegedly believed Mitchell-Momoh had informed police about his drug dealing operation.

On New Year’s Eve 2019, Wiggins’ girlfriend, former probation officer Elsa Segura, called Baugh pretending to be a prospective homebuyer and lured her to a property in Maple Grove, Minnesota. When Baugh arrived, two men kidnapped her, bound her hands with duct tape, and forced her into a U-Haul truck.
The attackers then drove to Baugh’s home, where Mitchell-Momoh was watching the couple’s two young daughters. A masked gunman shot him multiple times, though he survived. Baugh was later found in a Minneapolis alley, shot three times, including once in the face at point-blank range.
Second Conviction After Supreme Court Reversal
Wiggins was originally convicted in 2022 and sentenced to life in prison. However, the Minnesota Supreme Court reversed his conviction in 2024, ruling that the trial judge gave jurors erroneous instructions on accomplice liability.
A retrial that began in October 2025 resulted in Wiggins being found guilty on all counts for a second time, including aiding and abetting first-degree premeditated murder, attempted murder, and kidnapping.
Co-Defendants Already Sentenced
Three others have been convicted in Baugh’s death. Cedric Berry and Berry Davis, who carried out the kidnapping and shooting, are serving life sentences without parole. Segura had her conviction overturned but later pleaded guilty to kidnapping and received a 20-year sentence—a deal that infuriated Baugh’s family.
Hennepin County Attorney Mary Moriarty addressed the prolonged pursuit of justice following the November verdict. “Monique Baugh’s family has waited nearly six years for the cases against all defendants to conclude,” she stated. “Mr. Wiggins played a primary role in Monique’s death, and he is being held accountable.”
After two guilty verdicts and nearly six years of legal proceedings, will Wiggins finally face justice—or will the courts grant him yet another chance to evade accountability?
