- Pelosi tells Democrats impeachment should not be their agenda unless Trump crosses constitutional lines
- Republicans warn third impeachment inevitable if Democrats win House in 2026 midterms
- Recent House vote on impeachment articles drew 140 Democratic supporters but failed to advance
WASHINGTON, DC (TDR) — Former House Speaker Nancy Pelosi cautioned Democrats against pursuing a hasty third impeachment of President Donald Trump in recent interviews, even as Republicans warn such an effort is inevitable if Democrats reclaim the House in next year’s midterm elections.
Constitutional Violations Required for Action
Pelosi told ABC News and USA Today that any future impeachment proceedings would depend entirely on Trump’s conduct rather than political calculations. The California Democrat, who is retiring from Congress in January 2027, emphasized that impeachment requires serious constitutional violations.
“The one person who was responsible for the impeachments of Donald Trump is Donald Trump. It’s not something you decide to do. It’s what violation of the Constitution he engages in.”

The former Speaker, who presided over both of Trump’s first-term impeachments, stressed that Democrats should focus on using subpoena power to obtain information from federal agencies rather than rushing toward impeachment.
Republican Warnings About 2026 Control
House Speaker Mike Johnson warned at Turning Point USA’s AmericaFest conference that Democrats would impeach Trump if they win back the House majority. The Louisiana Republican told attendees that Democrats are “going to create absolute chaos” if given control.
“If we lose the House majority, the radical left, as you’ve already heard, is going to impeach President Trump.”
Republican National Committee National Press Secretary Kiersten Pels echoed this concern, stating Democrats have made clear their agenda involves “launching partisan impeachment crusades against President Trump and his administration” rather than addressing economic issues or border security.

Texas Representative Al Green filed articles of impeachment against Trump on December 10, 2025, forcing a House vote within two legislative days. The resolution accused Trump of threatening violence against six Democratic lawmakers and federal judges.
The House of Representatives voted 237-140 to table Green’s measure on December 11, with 47 Democrats voting present. Despite the failure, the vote demonstrated significant Democratic support for investigating presidential conduct.
Green has filed multiple impeachment articles against Trump throughout 2025, though Democratic leadership has discouraged such efforts without comprehensive investigation and broad national consensus.
Democrats Divided on Strategy
Democratic leaders remain cautious about embracing impeachment as a campaign strategy. House Democratic Leader Hakeem Jeffries, along with Democratic Whip Katherine Clark and Caucus Chair Pete Aguilar, issued a joint statement emphasizing that impeachment requires “comprehensive investigative process” and examination of key witnesses.
Some Democrats, including Representative Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, have stated impeachment “should absolutely be on the table” if Democrats win control. However, party leadership worries that focusing on impeachment could alienate moderate swing voters who supported Trump in 2024.
Pelosi’s retirement from Congress means she won’t directly influence any future impeachment proceedings. The 2026 midterm elections will determine whether Democrats gain the power to pursue additional investigations of the Trump administration.
Will voters view impeachment threats as legitimate constitutional oversight or political theater designed to obstruct the president’s agenda?
