- Vance linked Minnesota daycare fraud to immigration but offered no enforcement plan
- MAGA influencers accused administration officials of acting like podcasters instead of leaders
- Justice Department official Dhillon blocked critics and insulted supporters over fraud complaints
WASHINGTON, DC (TDR) — Vice President JD Vance drew sharp criticism from his own political base this week after commenting on Minnesota’s sprawling public assistance fraud scandal without announcing concrete action, exposing tensions within the MAGA movement over the gap between rhetoric and results.
YouTuber Investigation Sparks Outrage
The controversy erupted after independent journalist Nick Shirley posted a viral video visiting Minnesota daycare centers that appeared inactive despite receiving millions in state funding. One facility, the Quality Learning Center in South Minneapolis, displayed a sign misspelling “learning” as “learing” and allegedly received $4 million in taxpayer funds while serving virtually no children.
Vance reposted Shirley’s investigation on X, stating that developments in Minnesota represented a microcosm of immigration fraud. The Vice President praised Shirley for doing more journalism than Pulitzer Prize winners.
“What’s happening in Minnesota is a microcosm of the immigration fraud in our system. Politicians like it because they get power. Welfare cheats like it because they get rich.”

MAGA influencers and activists swiftly turned on Vance, questioning why no arrests or deportations had occurred if the situation was truly dire. Far-right figure Mike Cernovich replied directly to the Vice President, asking whether officials wanted to be podcasters or do their actual jobs.
“It brings shame to the FBI / DOJ that nobody thought to do this. Do people want to be podcasters or to do their official jobs?”
Another widely followed MAGA account told Vance that talking about problems in a helpless way was demoralizing. Libertarian podcaster Clint Russell warned Republicans to “kiss 2028 goodbye” without swift action, telling Vance he was the Vice President, not a passive observer.

The criticism reflects growing frustration among Trump supporters who expected maximalist outcomes including sweeping arrests and immediate deportations after the administration took office.
Justice Official Melts Down Over Criticism
Assistant Attorney General Harmeet Dhillon faced similar backlash when she shared a post about Minnesota election procedures, calling the state’s same-day voter registration vouching system “corrupt AF.” When Reagan Administration alum Hal Furman replied that it was unfortunate she wasn’t in a position to do something about corruption, Dhillon responded by blocking him.
The Justice Department official then escalated her response, lashing out at MAGA influencers in profane terms, calling critics spreading misinformation for money and using vulgar insults including calling them profiteers and useful idiots. On her official government account, Dhillon defended Attorney General Pam Bondi while complaining about having to put down her knitting to deal with critics.
Federal Response Announced After Outcry
Following the public backlash, FBI Director Kash Patel announced that the FBI had surged personnel and investigative resources to Minnesota to dismantle large-scale fraud schemes. However, critics pointed out Patel appeared to be taking credit for Biden-era investigations rather than announcing new enforcement actions.
Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem posted video of HSI and ICE agents conducting a massive investigation in Minneapolis. Federal prosecutors have said the Minnesota fraud may have involved more than $1 billion in stolen taxpayer money.
Movement Questions Leadership Approach
The episode reveals tension between MAGA expectations and administrative realities. The movement demands dramatic displays of force but has little patience for the legal and investigative timelines required for successful prosecutions.
Minnesota Governor Tim Walz defended his record on combating fraud, stating he has worked for years to crack down on abuse and has strengthened oversight including launching investigations into specific facilities. Trump administration advisers reportedly characterized the criticism as cyclical venting rather than serious dissent.
Will the gap between Trump administration rhetoric and enforcement action widen divisions within the MAGA coalition ahead of 2026 midterms?
