- Iranian clerics issue a fatwa offering $1.1 million bounty on President Trump and Israel’s Netanyahu, stoking global security concerns. Iranian leadership distances itself from the threat amid escalating tensions following last month’s U.S.-Israel-Iran conflict. Experts warn of religious radicalism fueling rogue actions despite Tehran’s official disavowals.
TEHRAN, Iran (TDR) — A group of senior Iranian clerics has issued a religious fatwa calling for the assassination of President Trump and Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, pledging a cash reward equivalent to over $1.1 million. The clerics’ decree marks one of the most provocative calls for political violence out of Iran in recent years and arrives amid renewed friction between the U.S. and Iran following last month’s 12-day conflict.
The reward—100 billion tomans, or about $1.1 million USD—was announced by Mansour Emami, the provincial head of Iran’s state-run Islamic Propagation Organization in West Azerbaijan, according to Iran International. Emami stated plainly: “We will give 100 billion tomans to anyone who brings the head of Trump.”
Tehran Attempts to Distance Itself
Iran’s new president, Masoud Pezeshkian, sought to dial back the inflammatory rhetoric in a recent interview with Tucker Carlson, denying any official government role. “They have not issued decrees or fatwas against any individual or against Donald Trump, to the best of my knowledge,” Pezeshkian said. “It has nothing to do with the Iranian government or the supreme leader of Iran.”
Despite that claim, the call to action was supported by 10 additional state-appointed clerics, and widely echoed across regime-adjacent media platforms. Iran’s religious class wields enormous influence, often operating independently of the presidency but still under the implicit protection of the state.
Fatwas Escalate Threat Environment
The new fatwas come from prominent voices, including Ayatollah Naser Makarem Shirazi and Ayatollah Hossein Nouri Hamedani. Shirazi’s fatwa declared: “Any regime or individual threatening the leaders of the Islamic [nation] qualifies as a mohareb,” meaning “enemy of God,” a term carrying capital punishment under Islamic law.

An Iranian crowdfunding site also claims to have raised $40 million to “support justice” by incentivizing so-called “committed individuals” to carry out the decree. While the legitimacy of the claim remains unclear, intelligence agencies are reportedly monitoring the situation closely.
Trump Responds with Humor, Not Alarm
President Trump responded nonchalantly when asked about the threat at a public event. A Fox News reporter asked when he last went sunbathing, to which he quipped: “Been a long time. I guess it’s a threat. I’m not sure it’s a threat, actually, but perhaps it is.”
Still, the comment came hours after Mohammad-Javad Larijani, a former senior adviser to Iran’s supreme leader, stated on Iranian state TV: “He can no longer sunbathe in Mar-a-Lago—a small drone might hit him in the navel.”
Heightened Tensions After Multi-State Conflict
The latest threats follow a 12-day regional conflict involving U.S., Israeli, and Iranian forces, and renewed calls from hardline factions in Iran to retaliate against perceived acts of aggression. While Tehran’s executive branch appears to be walking a diplomatic line, voices within its religious-political establishment are fueling a volatile climate.
When religious extremists issue million-dollar fatwas, how should global powers respond without escalating war?
