• Illegal border crossings under President Trump have plummeted, and with them, opposition to legal immigration has dropped dramatically. A new Gallup poll shows record-high support for immigration overall, with Republican skepticism easing significantly as enforcement efforts appear to have reassured voters amid prior concerns over national security and border integrity.

WASHINGTON, DC (TDR) — A dramatic decline in illegal border crossings under President Trump’s enforcement-focused immigration strategy has been accompanied by a historic surge in public support for legal immigration, according to a new Gallup survey released Friday.

The poll found that 79% of U.S. adults now say immigration is a good thing for the country, up from 64% last year. That figure marks the highest level of support Gallup has recorded in over two decades. Just 17% of respondents believe immigration is a bad thing — another record low.

Notably, the percentage of Americans calling for reduced immigration has dropped to 30%, down from 55% in 2024. The most significant shift came from Republican respondents: only 48% now support lower immigration levels, down from 88% just one year ago.

Among independents, support for reducing immigration fell by 21 points to 30%. Even among Democrats, support slipped from 28% to 16%, reflecting an overall move toward openness, attributed largely to the Trump administration’s aggressive crackdown on illegal entry.

Enforcement Reduces Concern, Raises Legal Support

The trend shift follows staggering improvements at the border. According to data released by Trump border czar Tom Homan, only 6,070 illegal crossings were recorded in June — compared to 83,000 in the same month last year.

Gallup concluded the administration’s “swift and visible response” to the Biden-era migrant surge significantly reassured voters, particularly conservatives, who had previously demanded tighter control.

“With that pressure eased,” the report said, “voters are now more likely to support constructive, legal immigration policy — including pathways to citizenship.”

Pathway to Citizenship Gains Broad Approval

Support for a pathway to citizenship for illegal immigrants rose to 78%, up from 70% in 2024. Among those brought into the U.S. as minors — known as Dreamers — support remains steady at around 80%.

Even support for mass deportation declined sharply, with only 38% of Americans now favoring it, compared to 47% last election cycle.
