- Retail giants like Walmart and Target are using President Trump’s strategic tariffs as scapegoats for unjustified price hikes. Despite rising profit margins and data showing non-tariffed items increasing in price, these corporations blame Trump’s America First trade policies, misleading consumers and undermining efforts to protect U.S. manufacturing from Chinese exploitation.
WASHINGTON, DC (TDR) — As President Trump reinstates tariffs to protect American industries and confront decades of unfair trade from the Chinese Communist Party, major retailers are pushing a different narrative—one that places the blame for rising prices on the White House rather than their own balance sheets.
Corporate Spin Masks Price-Gouging
Retailers like Walmart and Target are sounding alarms about “inevitable” price increases tied to Trump’s tariffs. But behind the headlines lies a more self-serving motive: maintaining inflated post-pandemic profit margins.
A recent Federal Reserve report confirmed that many retailers are raising prices even on non-tariffed goods, suggesting tariffs are being used as cover for across-the-board price hikes. These moves come as the public grows increasingly frustrated with unchecked corporate behavior in the wake of COVID-era inflation that has yet to meaningfully retreat.
Former Walmart CEO Bill Simon exposed the reality during a public interview, noting the company’s ability to absorb tariff costs:

“All that product that has the tariffs on it... actually went down in price,” Simon stated. “That sort of gives them room in my view to manage any tariff impact.”
Despite that admission, Walmart has since hiked prices and cited tariffs as the cause—an example of corporate opportunism dressed in political theater.
Tariffs Are a Tool, Not a Burden
The Trump administration has been unambiguous about the role tariffs play in an America First agenda. Far from a tax on consumers, they are a lever to restore U.S. manufacturing, enforce fair trade, and reduce dependency on hostile regimes like China. Trump’s policies are about reshoring production, not enriching multinational corporations.
Yet, many of these same corporations outsourced to China for decades and are now objecting to policies meant to correct the very imbalance they helped create. According to internal data from the Protecting America Initiative, 52% of voters agree that companies—not taxpayers—should bear the burden of cost increases linked to tariffs.
The survey also revealed growing public distrust toward large retailers:

“A majority of Americans are concerned that our nation’s largest retailers are using tariffs as an excuse to hike prices,” the report found.
Undermining American Strength
By blaming Trump’s trade policies for self-imposed pricing decisions, retailers risk weakening national resolve. That benefits only one party—China, which gains leverage as domestic opposition to tariffs grows.
The administration has pledged to fight back with economic policies rooted in national sovereignty, limited government, and economic independence. President Trump’s team is exploring expanded actions against companies engaged in deceptive price inflation.
“This is not a radical position—it’s common sense,” Trump recently stated. “We will stand up to China, bring jobs back home, and protect the American consumer—not corporate elites.”
With the One Big Beautiful Bill Act already reshaping entitlement and trade enforcement frameworks, the administration is laying the groundwork for long-term cost reduction and supply chain resilience.
Do you believe retailers are using tariffs as an excuse for greed, or are they justified in passing costs to consumers?
