• Democratic National Committee faces criticism for election autopsy report that sidesteps scrutiny of Joe Biden’s reelection bid and Kamala Harris’s presidential campaign, focusing instead on external allies and operational groups, raising concerns about accountability, transparency, and future electoral strategy.

WASHINGTON, DC (TDR) — As the Democratic Party wrestles with the fallout from its defeat in the 2024 presidential election, the Democratic National Committee is preparing an official postmortem that conspicuously avoids examining the core of its electoral collapse: the campaigns of President Joe Biden and Vice President Kamala Harris.

According to The New York Times, the DNC’s “after-action report” will largely bypass an analysis of President Biden’s decision to seek reelection at 82 or the subsequent campaign waged by Vice President Harris, who stepped in after Biden withdrew in July. Instead, the autopsy will focus on third-party organizations and external advocacy efforts.

The Absent Accountability

The Times notes the autopsy’s omissions are “something like eating at a steakhouse and then reviewing the salad.” Biden’s June debate with President Trump—marked by hesitations and verbal misfires—became a turning point. At one point, the president bizarrely claimed, “I finally beat Medicare.” Within weeks, he exited the race.

Rather than pivot decisively, the Harris campaign reportedly retained Biden’s campaign staff and refrained from rebranding. According to the Times, Harris was advised not to distance herself from Biden, and she was discouraged from framing Republicans as “weird,” a move her aides deemed “too negative.”

“We are not interested in second-guessing campaign tactics or decisions of campaign operatives,” said Jane Kleeb, chair of the Nebraska Democratic Party and a close ally of DNC Chair Ken Martin. “We are interested in what voters turned out for Republicans and Democrats, and how we can fix this moving forward.”

Strategic Evasion?

Critics argue that failing to interrogate the presidential campaign amounts to political malpractice. Even longtime Democratic operatives acknowledge the DNC risks appearing evasive.

“This is not the moment for half-measures or blind spots,” said a senior strategist familiar with the review. “If we don’t examine the top of the ticket, we’re setting ourselves up to repeat the same errors.”

The autopsy, still in draft form, is being led by Paul Rivera, a veteran party consultant. He defended the process, stating:

“We’re glad to see there’s so much interest in an after-action report on how Democrats can win again. But folks might be better off holding their applause, or their criticism, until we have had a chance to complete our work and people can actually read it.”

A Party at the Crossroads

The DNC’s decision to steer clear of self-critique reflects deeper ideological tensions within the Democratic coalition. Questions surrounding Biden’s age, Harris’s readiness, and strategic messaging failures remain unresolved.

As Republicans, emboldened by President Trump’s second-term agenda, press forward with judicial confirmations and federal reform, Democrats appear stalled in a moment of introspection—one that, so far, lacks candor.

Will the Democratic Party learn from its mistakes—or merely bury them under layers of bureaucratic deflection?
