• Authorities in Topeka, Kansas, have launched a homicide investigation after an AMBER Alert led to the safe recovery of a missing toddler. Two adults were found dead at the child’s home, and the suspect—arrested in Illinois—is now facing multiple felony charges in connection with the disturbing case.

TOPEKA, KS (TDR) — A Kansas community is reeling after the tragic sequence of events that began with a missing child alert and ended with a homicide investigation and an arrest across state lines. Authorities confirmed Tuesday that two individuals were found dead in a Topeka residence, while the missing toddler from the same home was located unharmed some 400 miles away.

The suspect, 32-year-old Christopher Barnshaw, was arrested in Mattoon, Illinois, after police discovered the child in the backseat of a vehicle matching the one reported missing by Topeka authorities. Barnshaw is currently being held on charges including aggravated kidnapping and unlawful use of a weapon.

AMBER Alert Triggers Multistate Search

The ordeal began when Topeka police issued an AMBER Alert early Tuesday, believing the child was in “imminent danger.” The child had reportedly been abducted sometime last week, but it wasn’t until Tuesday morning—when officers responded to a welfare check—that the gravity of the situation became clear.

“This is a tragedy, and I know the residents around this area are concerned,” Police Chief Chris Vallejo said at a press conference. “It’s not something that happens every day, and I feel for them.”

Homicide Investigation Underway

Inside the home, officers discovered the bodies of a man and a woman. The child, who lived at the residence, was missing—prompting the statewide alert and eventual multistate coordination that led to the child’s recovery in Illinois. Authorities have not yet released the names of the victims or their relationship to Barnshaw.

“We are going to bring this investigation to its full conclusion, and we will bring justice for the victims with whatever information we find out,” Chief Vallejo said. “There is no ongoing threat.”

Reunification and Justice

Authorities confirmed Tuesday evening that they are working to reunite the child with surviving family members. The motive and connections behind the incident remain under investigation.
