BRUSSELS (TDR) — The European Union (EU) announced Monday it will delay for six months the implementation of its countermeasures against the United States’ tariffs, originally set to begin this week. The decision follows a July 27, 2025, agreement between European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen and U.S. President Donald J. Trump aimed at easing growing trade tensions.
An EU Commission spokesperson hailed the deal as restoring “stability and predictability for citizens and businesses on both sides of the Atlantic.” Both sides are working to finalize a Joint Statement.
“With these objectives in mind, the Commission will take the necessary steps to suspend by six months the EU’s countermeasures against the U.S., which were due to enter into force on August 7,” the spokesperson said.
The European Commission, the EU’s executive body, agreed to the delay after weeks of negotiations. The deal includes a 15% tariff on most European goods entering the U.S., with the EU agreeing to remove tariffs on U.S. industrial exports.
President Trump also announced the EU will purchase $750 billion in U.S. energy and invest an additional $600 billion above current levels, though the EU cannot compel private companies to make those purchases.

The EU stressed the deal is a political agreement, not legally binding, with both sides committing to continue negotiations consistent with internal procedures.
This announcement follows Trump’s recent postponement of new tariffs on shipments from over 60 countries, now starting August 7 instead of August 1.
The suspension marks a temporary thaw in transatlantic trade tensions, offering hope for a more predictable economic relationship.
Will this pause in tariffs lead to lasting trade peace, or are tensions poised to reignite?
