WASHINGTON, D.C. (TDR) — A new Congressional Budget Office report has ignited a fresh clash over the One Big Beautiful Bill Act, forecasting that 10 million Americans could lose eligibility for their current Medicaid plan by 2034. Hakeem Jeffries blasted the measure as “deeply unfair” and a “Republican budget scam,” warning it will hit vulnerable communities hardest.

Republican Counterpoint

GOP leaders stress the CBO breakdown shows most impacted are 5.3 million able-bodied adults without dependents, who could still receive coverage by meeting 80 hours of work activity monthly. Exemptions would apply to pregnant women, minors, seniors, foster youth under 26, tribal members, the medically frail, caregivers with young children, and those meeting TANF or SNAP standards.

Coverage Overlap

Another 3.7 million losing Medicaid are dual enrollees in Medicare and Medicaid, or are enrolled in multiple states. Most would retain alternative coverage. Republicans say this undercuts Democratic claims of mass coverage loss.

Immigration Eligibility

Roughly 1 million affected are noncitizens failing federal Medicaid eligibility rules, yet covered by state-funded programs. GOP lawmakers argue this is a misuse of taxpayer funds.

Political Messaging War

House Energy and Commerce Chair Brett Guthrie accused Democrats of spreading a false narrative, noting most will either qualify for other programs or are ineligible under existing law. Federal Medicaid spending is still projected to grow 30% over the next decade if no further GOP-backed changes are enacted.
