• Actor Tom Cruise declined President Trump’s invitation to the 48th Kennedy Center Honors, citing scheduling conflicts.
  • Cruise will instead receive an honorary Oscar in November alongside Wynn Thomas and Debbie Allen.
  • President Trump admitted rejecting “too woke” candidates from this year’s honoree list.

WASHINGTON, D.C. (TDR)Tom Cruise has turned down President Donald Trump’s invitation to attend the 48th Kennedy Center Honors, according to a report from The Washington Post. The decision comes as Trump unveiled the five recipients for the December ceremony, which celebrates figures whose artistic contributions have shaped American culture.

This year’s honorees include George Strait, KISS, Michael Crawford, Gloria Gaynor, and Sylvester Stallone. Cruise was reportedly offered the honor but declined due to a packed schedule, which includes receiving an honorary Oscar at the Governors Awards in November. That event will also recognize Wynn Thomas and Debbie Allen.

In announcing the honorees, Trump joked about never having been recognized himself.

“I waited and waited and waited, and I said, ‘The hell with it, I’ll become chairman and I’ll give myself an honor,’” he quipped. “Next year, we’ll honor Trump, okay?”

Trump also revealed that he would serve as emcee of this year’s program — a role historically filled by figures like Walter Cronkite and Caroline Kennedy. While initially claiming the Kennedy Center board had chosen the honorees, he later acknowledged having final approval over the list and rejecting multiple names.

“I turned down plenty who were too woke,” Trump said, estimating he was “about 98 percent involved” in the final selections.

The Kennedy Center Honors have long been considered one of Washington’s most prestigious cultural events, attended by presidents, lawmakers, and major entertainment figures. This year’s ceremony will take place under heightened political attention, as Trump’s cultural agenda and outspoken views on “wokeness” continue to shape the national conversation.
