• California Gov. Gavin Newsom is drawing unexpected far-right attention as he battles Trump-led redistricting.
  • Nick Fuentes and his alt-right followers have praised Newsom’s family, sparking backlash and confusion.
  • The dynamic underscores fractures in Trump’s base while boosting Newsom’s national visibility.

SACRAMENTO, Calif. (TDR) — Democratic California Governor Gavin Newsom, widely viewed as a contender for the 2028 presidency, has emerged as one of the most visible antagonists to President Donald Trump’s redistricting push in Republican-led states. But in a strange political twist, Newsom is also garnering praise from an unlikely corner: far-right activist Nick Fuentes and his band of “Groypers.”

Why It Matters

The Groypers, an extremist group steeped in white nationalist rhetoric, have long pushed a vision of racial superiority that mainstream Republicans reject. Fuentes himself dined with Trump and Kanye West at Mar-a-Lago in 2022, but by 2024 had broken with the president, denouncing the MAGA movement as a “cult” and blasting Trump’s handling of the Jeffrey Epstein investigation.

That Fuentes now praises Newsom’s “beautiful family” and “beautiful genetics” is politically awkward, feeding narratives about extremism seeping into mainstream debates.

The Video That Sparked Attention

In a recent video posted to X, viewed more than 800,000 times, Fuentes fixated on Newsom’s family while also dragging Vice President JD Vance into the conversation. He remarked on Vance’s wife, Usha Vance, the daughter of Indian immigrants, and their children — comments that echoed racialized attacks that have followed the vice president since his 2024 nomination.

Fuentes suggested Vance had betrayed “white identity,” and in contrast lauded Newsom’s family for their “blood” and “genetics.” Responses from Fuentes’ support base were split: some ridiculed him, while others endorsed his comments with replies such as “True” and “I agree.” Experts note this language mirrors eugenicist ideologies that justified sterilization campaigns against marginalized groups in the past.

Expert Reaction

“Extremist movements cherry-pick what they like about a candidate,” said Mia Bloom, a Georgia State University professor of communications. “Their embrace of Newsom would be refuted by Governor Newsom. And unlike Trump, who refused to condemn his more extreme supporters, Newsom totally will.”

Newsom’s team has yet to comment publicly, though the governor has positioned himself as a combative figure willing to troll Trump with social media stunts, often posting in all caps and mocking Trump’s rhetoric.

Political Crosscurrents

The unexpected attention from Fuentes comes at a moment of visible strain in Trump’s coalition. Divisions over U.S. military strikes in Iran and the handling of classified Epstein files have split elements of his base, opening space for unlikely figures like Newsom to attract commentary from the far-right.

For Democrats, Newsom’s rising visibility offers a counterweight to gloom over declining voter registrations and flagging enthusiasm in the wake of their 2024 electoral defeats. Strategists say Newsom’s combative stance against Trump could make him the party’s standard-bearer in 2028.

Looking Ahead

As the 2028 presidential race begins to take shape, both Newsom and Vance are viewed as potential contenders. Fuentes’ embrace of Newsom may ultimately prove meaningless in electoral terms, but it reflects the strange realignments in American politics under Trump’s second term.

For now, Democrats see in Newsom a fighter who can mirror Trump’s style without ceding ground. Republicans, meanwhile, must wrestle with the optics of extremists drifting away from Trump and toward a Democratic governor.

Will Newsom’s trolling strategy propel him to national leadership—or will far-right “support” taint his rise?
