SANTA BARBARA, Calif. (TDR) — Healthcare provider Sutter Health is facing fierce backlash after a disturbing video filmed inside its Pesetas Urgent Care clinic circulated over Labor Day weekend. The video, posted by a TikTok account under the name @angieuncut, appeared to show multiple staff members mocking patients by posing around what seemed to be bodily fluids on exam chairs.

Screenshots reveal at least six separate images: in one, eight smiling workers in scrubs stand together as text across the screen reads, “Are patients allowed to leave you guys gifts?” Subsequent photos show staff laughing and gesturing at stained exam chairs, with captions such as “all shades and opacities”. In the final frame, six employees surround an exam table, one squatting on top while another props her foot inches from a visible liquid stain.

Outrage Across Social Media

The video quickly migrated from TikTok to the Santa Barbara Reddit thread, generating more than 500 comments within a day. Users described the behavior as “unprofessional,” “dehumanizing,” and “a betrayal of patient trust.” Several noted that Angie, the original poster, had previously shared other questionable content, including an image of a feces-smeared restroom with the caption, “A great way to start my shift.”

On Instagram, critics flooded Sutter Health’s official account, demanding accountability. Some claimed the company began deleting comments, further fueling outrage. Yelp reviews for the urgent care location also plunged, with one-star ratings describing staff as “soulless” and “unethical.”

One reviewer wrote, “They were stupid enough to post these pictures with their faces. Makes me not trust their competence as medical professionals. I am considering leaving Sansum as a whole after this.”

Corporate Response

In a statement released Tuesday morning, Sutter Health confirmed the images were taken at its Pesetas Urgent Care facility but insisted the TikTok poster was a former employee. “The trust and dignity of our patients always remain our top priority,” the company said. “We are deeply concerned about a disrespectful social media post made on a personal account by a former employee and we are conducting a full review in line with our policies.”

The provider confirmed that any staff members depicted in the video have been placed on administrative leave pending investigation. “The post goes against the values, professionalism, and respect we expect from all staff,” the statement continued. “We have strict policies to protect patient privacy and dignity, and any behavior that disrespects those standards is unacceptable.”

Broader Implications

The scandal highlights how quickly misconduct inside healthcare settings can erode public trust once amplified on social media. Hospitals and clinics, already under scrutiny for workplace culture and patient safety standards, must now contend with viral videos that blur the line between dark humor and unprofessional behavior.

Medical ethicists warn that such behavior not only demeans patients but may also violate federal privacy rules. Even though no patient was directly visible in the images, the implication of mocking individuals seeking care cuts deeply against healthcare’s ethical commitments.

For Sutter Health, a regional giant that oversees dozens of clinics and hospitals, the controversy is a reputational crisis. The company has long emphasized patient-centered care and professionalism in its messaging. The video undermines that image, forcing leadership to demonstrate swift and decisive accountability.

Patient Trust at Stake

Community reactions in Santa Barbara suggest a potential long-term fallout. Local residents expressed doubts about continuing to seek treatment at Sutter facilities. As one commenter put it: “Healthcare is supposed to be about compassion, not about mocking people when they’re most vulnerable.”

The incident underscores the challenges healthcare organizations face in the age of TikTok and Reddit, where missteps — even by a handful of employees — can spark widespread outrage and corporate investigations. For now, Sutter’s response will be measured against its ability to reassure patients that respect and professionalism remain its guiding principles.

Will Sutter Health’s response be enough to restore trust, or has the viral video caused irreparable damage to its reputation?
