• Federal agents in camouflage patrolled downtown Chicago streets Sunday drawing stares and taunts from residents and tourists.

  • Early Tuesday raid on South Side apartment building using drones, helicopters and dozens of vehicles left residents stunned.

CHICAGO, IL (TDR) — The Trump administration has visibly followed through on its month-long threat to bring federal force to Chicago, deploying armed agents in camouflage gear to patrol downtown streets and conducting dramatic pre-dawn raids in residential neighborhoods.

The escalation marks a significant moment in the administration's broader campaign to expand immigration enforcement and military presence in Democrat-led cities. Chicago, the nation's third-largest city, has emerged as a focal point for what officials call "Operation Midway Blitz."

Downtown Patrols Draw Attention

On Sunday, heavily armed Border Patrol agents wearing tactical gear and masks made arrests near famous downtown landmarks, patrolling Michigan Avenue and upscale neighborhoods in conspicuous packs. The agents drew stares from tourists and taunts from residents, including from a bicyclist whom agents attempted to chase.

"It looks un-American," said Chicago Alderman Brandon Reilly, who represents downtown on the City Council. He deemed the display a "photo opp" for President Donald Trump.

Gregory Bovino, a Border Patrol agent known for aggressive tactics in Los Angeles, walked Chicago streets Sunday with dozens of agents. "Whether it takes place here in the city or the suburbs, it's all the same to us," Bovino stated.

Illinois Governor JB Pritzker characterized the tactics as politically motivated intimidation rather than legitimate law enforcement.

"ICE is running around the Loop, harassing people for not being white. This is an attack on neighborhoods, on lawful residents, on U.S. citizens. That's not preventing crime as Donald Trump claims, that's threatening public safety."

Military Deployment Imminent

On Monday, U.S. military officials announced that 100 National Guard troops would be deployed to Illinois to protect federal facilities. Pritzker said the Illinois National Guard received a memo showing the Department of Homeland Security requested military personnel from the Defense Department "for the protection of ICE personnel and facilities."

The deployment is expected in the coming days. However, state officials have had no communication with the Trump administration about the plans. "No one in the administration – the president or anybody under him – has called anyone in my administration, or me," Pritzker said. "So, it's clear that in secret they're planning this – well, it's an invasion with US troops, if they in fact do that."

The mobilization follows a similar pattern to deployments in Portland, Oregon, where 200 National Guard members were federalized for 60 days, and Memphis, Tennessee, where troops are also expected.

Dramatic South Side Raid

Early Tuesday morning, federal agents conducted a middle-of-the-night raid on a rundown apartment building in the South Shore neighborhood on Chicago's South Side. The operation employed drones, Blackhawk helicopters, trucks and dozens of vehicles.

"My building is shaking. So, I'm like, 'What is that?' Then I look out the window, it's a Blackhawk helicopter," said witness Dr. Alii Muhammad.

By morning, the building was mostly empty of residents, and neighbors were stunned by the show of force. Pertissue Fisher, a woman who lives on the corner of 75th and South Shore Drive, said ICE agents detained everyone in the building.

"They just treated us like we were nothing."

Wednesday morning, DHS officials said in a statement that "allied federal law enforcement agencies with CBP, FBI, and ATF, executed an enforcement operation in Chicago's South Shore area, a location known to be frequented by Tren de Aragua members and their associates."

While immigrant advocates believe approximately 30 to 40 people were detained, federal authorities have not confirmed numbers. Consequently, it remains unclear how many were held and possibly arrested.

Protests and Political Tensions

The federal presence has sparked protests across Chicago. Tuesday evening, demonstrators blocked part of westbound Wacker Drive at Michigan Avenue. The Coalition Against the Trump Administration organized what they called an "emergency protest against ICE and federal troops in Chicago."

"It's ridiculous that our tax dollars are going toward these types of raids," said Nick Sous with the U.S. Palestinian Community Network. "When it could be funding healthcare, housing and other issues and needs of the community here in Chicago."

Outside the ICE detention facility in suburban Broadview, federal officers have fired rubber pellets and chemical irritants into crowds of protesters. Two individuals were charged with forcibly assaulting federal officers, though authorities confirmed both had lawful permits for firearms they were carrying.

Meanwhile, Broadview police opened an investigation into federal agents after an allegedly unprovoked attack on a CBS News Chicago reporter's vehicle.

Trump's Broader Vision

Trump has explicitly stated his intention to use Chicago as a military training ground. During remarks to military leaders, he said: "I told [Defense Secretary] Pete [Hegseth] we should use some of these dangerous cities as training grounds for our military, National Guard, but military, because we're going into Chicago very soon."

Trump called Pritzker "stupid" and said Chicago needs "the military desperately," despite violent crime and murder rates having declined in the city.

Additionally, Trump addressed potential military responses to protesters, saying: "I say they spit, we hit."

State Resistance

Pritzker and Mayor Brandon Johnson have vowed to resist the federal intervention legally. The governor's office is preparing immediate court action once troops arrive. Christian Mitchell, Pritzker's running mate and former deputy governor, is an active member of the Illinois National Guard.

"With one voice, we are telling this unwarranted and unconstitutional occupation by ICE and potentially by military troops to get out of Chicago," Pritzker declared. "You are not helping us."

Johnson called armed border agents in downtown Chicago a "stunt that has nothing to do with public safety."

Nevertheless, the operation continues expanding. Trump's administration is using Naval Station Great Lakes near North Chicago as a command post, where a large contingent of federal agents has been stationed.

The Department of Homeland Security named the campaign "Operation Midway Blitz" and said it was launched to target immigrants protected by Illinois's sanctuary policies. Federal officials maintain they are arresting "gang members, murderers, pedophiles, and rapists that have terrorized American communities."

Despite this, local officials argue the true goal is political intimidation of Trump's opponents rather than genuine public safety improvement.
