• U.S. Marshals offering $5,000 reward and warn Turner may be armed
  • Coach faces 10 felony counts including child pornography possession and soliciting a minor
  • Undefeated Union High School team's season ended in state semifinal loss without him

APPALACHIA, VA (TDR) — A three-week manhunt continues across the rugged mountains of southwestern Virginia after football coach Travis Turner goes missing, leaving behind an undefeated team and a community grappling with disturbing allegations against a man they trusted with their children.

Turner, 46, was last seen November 20 walking into the dense woods near his home carrying a firearm, according to his family. Virginia State Police were en route to interview him as part of an investigation when they learned he had already vanished.

Charges Revealed Days Later

The initial missing persons case took a darker turn on November 25 when authorities announced 10 felony warrants against Turner. The Union High School head coach faces five counts of possession of child pornography and five counts of using a computer to solicit a minor.

"We remain prayerful for his safe return and for everyone affected by the circumstances surrounding his disappearance. Any allegations should be addressed through the proper legal process — not through speculation or rumor."

That statement came from family attorney Adrian Collins, speaking on behalf of Turner's wife Leslie and their three children.

Federal Agencies Join Search

The U.S. Marshals Service announced a $5,000 reward for information leading to Turner's arrest, warning in a wanted poster that he may be armed. The FBI has also joined the search effort alongside state police.

Authorities have deployed drones, K-9 units, bloodhounds and helicopters across the mountainous terrain surrounding Appalachia, a town of fewer than 2,000 residents. The rugged Appalachian landscape has complicated search operations.

Team Played On Without Him

While football coach Travis Turner goes missing, his players pressed forward. The Bears won three playoff games under interim coach Jason Edwards, advancing to the Class 2 state semifinals with a 14-0 record.

Their remarkable run ended December 6 in heartbreaking fashion. Union fell 29-28 to Glenvar High School after a failed two-point conversion in the final seconds.

Family Pleads for His Return

Turner's wife Leslie has cooperated with investigators, consenting to multiple searches of their properties. She reported him missing after he failed to return home November 20, though authorities informed her a report could not be filed until 24 hours had passed.

The family issued an emotional plea through their attorney: "Leslie pleads for you to come home and face the allegations by defending yourself in a court of law. Don't leave your family to fight this battle without you."

Turner had coached at Union since 2011 and previously played quarterback at Appalachia High School under his father, Tom Turner, a Virginia High School League Hall of Famer.

Will Turner emerge from hiding to face the charges, or has the decorated coach vanished for good?
