- President promises very serious retaliation following Saturday attack blamed on Islamic State
- Three additional service members wounded in ambush during counter-terrorism mission near historic city
- Attack marks first American fatalities in Syria since Assad government fell one year ago
DAMASCUS, SY (TDR) — President Donald Trump pledged Saturday that the United States will retaliate after a lone Islamic State gunman killed two Army soldiers and a civilian interpreter during an ambush on a joint American-Syrian patrol near Palmyra. Three additional service members were wounded in the first fatal attack on United States forces in Syria since the fall of President Bashar al-Assad's government one year ago.
The president addressed reporters at the White House before departing for the Army-Navy football game in Baltimore, offering condolences to the victims' families while declaring the incident an ISIS attack. Trump stated the three wounded Americans appeared to be recovering well and emphasized that Syrian forces fought alongside United States troops during the engagement near the historic desert city.

Syrian Leader Devastated
Trump characterized Syrian President Ahmed al-Sharaa as devastated by the attack, noting the new Syrian leader's anger and disturbance over the incident. The president later reinforced his warning through a Truth Social post describing the ambush as targeting both American and Syrian forces in a dangerous region not fully controlled by Damascus authorities.
"We will retaliate. There will be very serious retaliation."
Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth confirmed that partner forces killed the attacker following the initial assault. Hegseth issued a stark warning declaring that anyone targeting Americans anywhere in the world would face relentless pursuit and lethal consequences. Pentagon spokesman Sean Parnell identified the civilian casualty as a United States interpreter and stated the attack occurred as soldiers conducted a key leader engagement supporting ongoing counter-terrorism operations.
Syrian Security Warnings Ignored
Syrian Interior Ministry spokesperson Nour Eddin al-Baba revealed that Syrian Internal Security Forces leadership issued intelligence warnings to coalition forces about possible ISIS attacks in the Badia region. The spokesperson claimed coalition forces did not adequately consider the Syrian warnings before proceeding with the joint tour. According to al-Baba, the assailant had been under evaluation for extremist ideas, with assessment results scheduled for Sunday despite the attack occurring Saturday during an administrative holiday.
The shooting took place near Palmyra according to Syrian state news agency SANA, which initially reported two Syrian security force members and several American service members wounded. Casualties were evacuated by helicopter to the Al-Tanf garrison near Syria's border with Iraq and Jordan. Combat aircraft provided overhead support as highway traffic between Deir Ezzor and Damascus was halted.
Evolving Regional Dynamics
The United States maintains hundreds of troops deployed across eastern Syria as part of an international coalition fighting Islamic State remnants. Syria joined this coalition last month as Damascus works to improve relations with Western nations following the December 2024 ouster of Assad when insurgents captured the capital. Interim President al-Sharaa made a historic Washington visit last month for discussions with Trump, marking warming ties after decades without diplomatic relations under Assad family rule.

Islamic State was territorially defeated in Syria during 2019, but United Nations assessments indicate the group retains between 5,000 and 7,000 fighters across Syria and Iraq. Sleeper cells continue conducting deadly attacks despite lacking territorial control. The deadliest previous assault on American forces occurred in 2019 when a Manbij blast killed two service members and two civilians along with Syrian nationals during a patrol operation.
Central Command stated it will withhold service member identities for 24 hours following next-of-kin notification in accordance with Pentagon policy.
