- Trump demands CBS "put to sleep" Stephen Colbert's show before scheduled May 2026 finale
- President renews calls for revoking broadcast licenses over negative coverage of Republicans
- Attack follows Media Research Center study documenting overwhelming anti-conservative bias in late-night comedy
WASHINGTON, DC (TDR) — President Donald Trump launched a pre-Christmas tirade against late-night television hosts, demanding that CBS immediately cancel Stephen Colbert's show and renewing threats to revoke broadcast licenses for networks he claims demonstrate political bias against Republicans.
In a series of Truth Social posts early Wednesday morning, Trump called Colbert "a pathetic trainwreck, with no talent or anything else necessary for show business success" and urged the network to end the program immediately rather than waiting for its scheduled May 2026 conclusion.
"CBS should, 'put him to sleep,' NOW, it is the humanitarian thing to do!"
The inflammatory language sparked immediate backlash on social media, with critics noting the ominous phrasing typically associated with euthanasia.
License Revocation Threats Resurface
Seven minutes after his initial attack, Trump expanded his criticism to include all broadcast late-night shows, questioning which network featured "the worst Late Night host" among CBS, ABC and NBC. He then escalated to threatening the fundamental operations of broadcast television networks.
"If Network NEWSCASTS, and their Late Night Shows, are almost 100% Negative to President Donald J. Trump, MAGA, and the Republican Party, shouldn't their very valuable Broadcast Licenses be terminated? I say, YES!"
The president's threats raise serious constitutional concerns regarding government interference with press freedom. Broadcast licenses are granted by the Federal Communications Commission and legally cannot be revoked based on content or political viewpoint under First Amendment protections.
Conservative Study Fuels Attack
Trump's overnight rant appeared timed to coincide with a Media Research Center study released Tuesday showing 92% of political jokes on six nightly late-night shows targeted conservatives, up from 82% in 2024.
The conservative watchdog group analyzed 818 episodes from January through mid-December, documenting 13,097 political jokes across programs hosted by Jimmy Kimmel, Colbert, Jimmy Fallon, Seth Meyers and The Daily Show.

Trump personally was the target of 7,045 jokes, dwarfing the 220 directed at Joe Biden. The study also found liberal guests outnumbered conservatives nearly 100-to-1, with only two conservative guests appearing across all shows during the study period.
Colbert Already Canceled
Trump's demand for immediate Trump Colbert cancellation comes months after CBS announced in July that The Late Show would end following the 2025-26 season. The network cited "financial reasons" amid parent company Paramount's merger with Skydance Media, which required FCC approval.
The timing raised eyebrows, coming just days after Colbert called Paramount's $16 million settlement of Trump's lawsuit against 60 Minutes a "big, fat bribe" on air. Trump had sued over the program's editing of a Kamala Harris interview.
When the cancellation was announced, Trump gloated on social media, posting "I absolutely love that Colbert got fired." Colbert later responded on air, telling the president "Go fuck yourself" with the expletive censored.
Pattern of Attacks on Media Critics
The president has repeatedly targeted late-night hosts who criticize him, previously calling for Jimmy Kimmel to be fired and suggesting their disapproval should cost networks their broadcast licenses.
In September, ABC temporarily suspended Kimmel Live after the host made controversial comments linking a political killing to Trump's MAGA movement. Trump seized on the incident to float license revocation ideas with FCC Chairman Brendan Carr.

The president concluded his late-night attack spree by wishing everyone "MERRY CHRISTMAS!!!" in a final post.
Can the president legally revoke broadcast licenses based on political content, or do First Amendment protections shield networks from government retaliation over criticism?
