• Trump posts private messages from European leaders about Greenland overnight
  • Demands Davos meeting while declaring Arctic takeover “imperative for world security”
  • White House confirms 25% tariffs on eight EU states if Greenland talks stall

WASHINGTON, D.C. (TDR) — President Donald Trump shared private messages from European leaders about Greenland in multiple overnight social media posts, demanding a meeting on the island at this week’s World Economic Forum in Davos while reiterating his threat to acquire Greenland, declaring it “imperative for National and World Security.”

The Truth Social posts—published just after midnight—appear to show back-channel texts or e-mails between Trump and leaders of the UK, Denmark, Germany and France, with some messages mocking the U.S. takeover bid and others praising “good-faith talks” on a joint Arctic summit.

“Complete and Total Control of Greenland is imperative for National and World Security,” Trump wrote in an 18 July letter attached to the posts.

The overnight dump includes what Trump claims are:

  • a UK minister joking “Greenland is colder than your reception”;
  • a French aide calling the idea “amateurish”;
  • a Norwegian PM reply praising “good-faith talks” on a joint summit;
  • a Danish official warning “sovereignty is non-negotiable.”

London and Paris have not denied the authenticity of the texts, but both called the leak “unprofessional” and “counter-productive.”

Davos Demand & Tariff Threat

White House officials confirmed Trump will demand a Greenland summit at Davos this week, while reiterating a 25% tariff threat on eight EU states if talks stall. The levies—confirmed in a USTR notice—start at 10% on 1 February, rising to 25% on 1 June.

NATO Emergency Session

NATO Secretary-General Mark Rutte convened an emergency ambassadors’ meeting Sunday, warning that “economic warfare among allies undermines Article 5 solidarity.”

“If allies can be blackmailed, the alliance is already broken,” Danish FM Lars Løkke Rasmussen told allies.

Arctic Arms Race

Beyond tariffs, the crisis has accelerated military planning. Denmark announced it will:

  • deploy an additional 600 troops to Thule Air Base;
  • fast-track a £1.2 billion upgrade to Arctic radar stations;
  • invite joint German-Dutch naval patrols in the Denmark Strait.

Germany’s defence ministry confirmed it will send a frigate and supply ship to Greenland waters in August, while the Netherlands pledged maritime patrol aircraft.

“We are not escalating—we are deterring,” said German Defence Minister Boris Pistorius.

EU “Bazooka” Response

Brussels is preparing retaliation. The Commission will vote Wednesday on activating the never-used Anti-Coercion Instrument, allowing 25% duties on U.S. bourbon, Harleys and Maine lobster within 60 days.

“We will not negotiate with a gun to the head,” said Trade Commissioner Maroš Šefčovič.

Trans-Atlantic Trust Fracture

Former NATO deputy supreme allied commander Richard Clark warns the stand-off could “shatter the glue of the alliance” if not resolved quickly.

“Economic coercion among allies is kryptonite to Article 5 solidarity,” Clark told TDR.

Market Tremors

During the NATO session, the euro slid 0.9% to $1.01, while Danish pharmaceutical giant Novo Nordisk—whose insulin is on the U.S. target list—fell 4.2%. U.S. bourbon futures dropped 2.1% on expectations of EU reprisals.

Calendar of Escalation

  • 1 Feb — first 10% tariff tranche takes effect;
  • 1 Jun — levies rise to 25% unless deal struck;
  • 15 Aug — EU counter-tariffs enter force (if no climb-down);
  • 20 Aug — Emergency NATO defence ministers’ meeting;
  • TBA — House Foreign Affairs hearing on Arctic policy.

Off-Ramp Scenarios

Diplomats float a face-saving exit: 90-day tariff freeze, joint EU-US Arctic infrastructure fund, NATO-hosted Greenland dialogue forum. Washington has given no sign it will accept, keeping markets on edge.

“Either we find a bridge, or we fall into a tariff abyss,” said Bruegel director Guntram Wolff.

Will NATO survive the Greenland gambit, or are we watching the alliance fracture in real time?
