LOS ANGELES, CA (TDR) — Recording Academy has announced that R&B legend Brandy will receive the prestigious Black Music Icon Award at the fourth annual Recording Academy Honors ceremony on January 29, 2026. The recognition comes as the organization celebrates her three-decade career that has fundamentally shaped modern R&B and vocal performance.

The Recording Academy Honors, hosted by the Academy's Black Music Collective, will take place at the Fairmont Century Plaza in Los Angeles, just days before the 2026 GRAMMY Awards. Brandy will share the stage with gospel icon Kirk Franklin, who will also receive the Black Music Icon Award, while producer Pharrell Williams will be honored with the Dr. Dre Global Impact Award.

"Vocal Bible" Legacy Recognition

Since her quadruple-platinum debut album in 1994, Brandy has earned the moniker "Vocal Bible" for her unparalleled vocal technique and genre-defining artistry. Her five-time platinum album Never Say Never produced the GRAMMY-winning classic "The Boy Is Mine" and established her as one of R&B's most influential voices.

"So grateful and truly humbled to receive the Recording Academy's Black Music Icon Award. This honor means more than words—standing on the shoulders of those who paved the way, and celebrating the legacy, resilience, and brilliance of Black music." — Brandy Norwood, Jan. 2026

The award specifically recognizes Black music creators whose artistry, innovation and service have shaped the industry and inspired generations worldwide. Brandy's influence extends beyond music into television and film, including her starring role in the hit sitcom Moesha and iconic performance in Disney's Rodgers & Hammerstein's Cinderella.

Continuing Creative Evolution

Brandy's career has continued evolving with her acclaimed 2020 album b7 and 2023's Christmas With Brandy, demonstrating her sustained relevance across decades. She has expanded her creative footprint through recent acting roles in A24's The Front Room, Disney's Descendants: The Rise of Red, and the 2025 film I Know What You Did Last Summer.

The honor comes as Brandy prepares to release her first memoir PHASES on March 31, described as the result of countless hours of reflection, work and healing. The book promises to offer intimate insights into her journey from teenage sensation to respected industry veteran.

Black Music Collective Mission

The Black Music Collective, established in 2020, serves as an advisory board of music industry leaders dedicated to advancing opportunities in Black music and championing increased representation across the field. The organization has awarded $85,000 in scholarship grants to Black college students and HBCU music programs.

"Pharrell, Brandy and Kirk are true visionaries and masters of their craft. Each has built a legacy that transcends genre, defies convention and shapes culture. Their artistry continues to inspire generations of artists around the world." — Harvey Mason Jr., Recording Academy CEO
