- Investigators recovered "quite a number" of gloves several miles from Nancy Guthrie's Tucson home
- A black glove found roughly 1.5 miles from the residence resembles those worn by the masked suspect in FBI surveillance footage
- Sheriff Chris Nanos says the evidentiary value remains unknown pending DNA analysis at out-of-state laboratory
TUCSON, AZ (TDR) — As the search for missing Nancy Guthrie enters its third week, investigators have recovered multiple gloves scattered across a wide radius near the 84-year-old's home, including one black glove discovered approximately 1.5 miles from her residence that bears striking resemblance to the attire worn by her suspected abductor. Pima County Sheriff Chris Nanos confirmed Friday that forensic teams collected the items as potential evidence, though he cautioned that investigators remain uncertain about their significance to the kidnapping case.
The discovery marks a potential breakthrough in the investigation that has gripped the nation since the mother of NBC "Today" show anchor Savannah Guthrie vanished from her Catalina Foothills home on January 31.
Gloves Found Miles From Crime Scene
Contrary to initial reports suggesting evidence was discovered on Guthrie's property, authorities clarified that the gloves were located at varying distances from her residence, with the closest found approximately two miles away. Some gloves were discovered up to 10 miles from the home, indicating either a wide search perimeter or potential discard locations along escape routes.

The FBI Evidence Response Team was photographed recovering one black glove from roadside shrubbery on Wednesday, carefully packaging the item for DNA analysis. Video footage published by the New York Post showed investigators combing through desert vegetation where the garment was discovered.
Resemblance To Suspect's Attire
The recovered gloves hold particular significance because they appear to match the black gloves worn by the masked individual captured on Guthrie's doorbell camera footage. The FBI released surveillance video showing a man wearing a ski mask, black gloves, an Ozark Trail backpack, and a visible gun holster approaching Guthrie's front door in the early morning hours of February 1.
"From the backpack to the holster, to the potential weapon, to the jacket, to the flashlight in his mouth, to the unique ski mask … most of them have some unique characteristics that will absolutely be followed up on." —Lance Leising, Retired FBI Special Agent, Feb. 12, 2026
The suspect is described as a male approximately 5 feet 9 inches to 5 feet 10 inches tall with an average build. The FBI has increased the reward for information leading to Guthrie's recovery to 100,000 dollars in hopes of generating additional leads.
DNA Testing Underway At Florida Lab
All recovered gloves have been sent for forensic analysis along with DNA samples collected from Guthrie's home. Sheriff Nanos confirmed that investigators discovered genetic material at the residence that does not belong to Guthrie or individuals in close contact with her, creating additional avenues for identification.
The evidence is being processed at DNA Labs International in Florida, a private facility approximately 2,000 miles from Tucson. The decision to use the out-of-state laboratory has drawn criticism from forensic experts who argue the distance creates unnecessary delays in an active kidnapping investigation where "every hour matters."

Investigation Generates 30,000 Leads
The search for Guthrie has produced an overwhelming volume of public assistance, with authorities receiving more than 30,000 tips since the investigation began. Despite the extensive public response and the discovery of physical evidence, officials have not identified any suspects or confirmed Guthrie's location.
Law enforcement conducted an operation at a residence approximately two miles from Guthrie's home on Friday night, deploying SWAT and forensic teams, but the activity concluded without confirmation of any breakthrough. A person of interest detained earlier in the week near the Mexican border was subsequently released without charges.
"I believe she will be found. I believe we are working as hard as we can to do that as fast as we can." —Sheriff Chris Nanos, Feb. 14, 2026
The Guthrie family has maintained public pressure while pleading directly with potential captors. Savannah Guthrie and her siblings released video statements indicating willingness to pay any ransom for their mother's safe return, though law enforcement has cautioned against such payments without proof of life.
When physical evidence discovered miles from a crime scene potentially matches a suspect's attire but requires out-of-state laboratory analysis, what protocols should determine whether local processing capabilities or established vendor relationships take priority in time-sensitive kidnapping investigations?
