However, the decision has sparked backlash, particularly from conservative commentators. Critics argue PolitiFact overlooked other significant falsehoods, such as narratives about President Joe Biden’s health or his claim that he wouldn’t pardon his son, Hunter Biden. On social media, users called the selection biased, with comments like, “Lie of the year: Joe Biden is fine,” and “PolitiFact is hopelessly partisan.”

Conservative watchdog Media Research Center (MRC) also weighed in, describing Biden’s fitness narrative as the real “Lie of the Year.” MRC President Brent Bozell specifically criticized MSNBC host Joe Scarborough for praising Biden’s mental acuity in March, only for Biden to exit the race months later after a disastrous debate performance.

Bozell stated, “Scarborough’s sycophancy stood out in a media landscape full of Biden excuse-makers.” Biden’s June 27 debate performance, where he appeared confused and made puzzling remarks such as “finally beat Medicare,” became a turning point, leading to his withdrawal from the 2024 presidential race.
