• Biden’s decision to honor Liz Cheney and Bennie Thompson, key figures in the January 6 committee, is seen by many conservatives as a divisive move that politicizes the Presidential Citizens Medal.
  • Critics argue that Biden is prioritizing symbolic gestures, like awarding progressive activists, over addressing pressing national issues such as inflation, border security, and crime.
  • Honoring long-time Biden allies like Ted Kaufman and Chris Dodd raises concerns of cronyism, with conservatives questioning whether merit or political loyalty guided the president’s selections.

President Joe Biden awarded the Presidential Citizens Medal, the nation’s second-highest civilian honor, to 20 individuals on Thursday, drawing sharp reactions from across the political spectrum. Notably, the list includes Liz Cheney and Bennie Thompson, the leaders of the controversial January 6 congressional investigation, who former President Donald Trump claims should face jail time for their actions.

The ceremony at the White House also celebrated figures from various fields, including advocates for same-sex marriage, military veterans, and long-time Biden allies. However, the event has reignited debates about partisanship, the legacy of the January 6 committee, and Biden’s political priorities.

Cheney and Thompson: Polarizing Picks

Liz Cheney, a former Republican congresswoman from Wyoming, and Bennie Thompson, a Mississippi Democrat, chaired the House committee investigating the January 6 Capitol riot. Their selection has sparked outrage among conservatives who view the committee’s work as politically motivated. The committee’s final report accused Trump of orchestrating a “multi-part conspiracy” to overturn the 2020 election results.

Trump, who remains influential within the Republican Party and is set to retake office in January 2025, has labeled the committee members as “political thugs” and accused them of destroying evidence. During a recent NBC interview, he stated that Cheney and Thompson “should go to jail” for their roles in the investigation. Cheney, who openly endorsed Democrat Kamala Harris in the 2024 election, continues to provoke strong reactions from Trump allies.

Honoring Advocates for Progressive Causes

Biden’s honorees also included figures from progressive movements, such as Mary Bonauto and Evan Wolfson, pioneers in the fight for marriage equality. Their recognition has drawn praise from left-leaning groups but criticism from conservative observers, who argue that Biden’s focus on progressive causes alienates half the country.

Military figures and activists were also acknowledged. Frank Butler, known for advancing the use of tourniquets in battlefield medicine, and Diane Carlson Evans, an Army nurse who advocated for the Vietnam Women’s Memorial, received awards. Eleanor Smeal, a prominent women’s rights activist, was also honored.

Biden’s Allies Take the Spotlight

The president didn’t shy away from including his long-time friends among the honorees. Former Senators Ted Kaufman of Delaware and Chris Dodd of Connecticut, both close to Biden throughout his political career, were celebrated. Critics argue that their selection reflects cronyism, emphasizing personal loyalty over broader merit.

Other honorees included academics, photographers, and advocates for medical and social causes. Frances Visco, leader of the National Breast Cancer Coalition, and Bobby Sager, a photographer, were among those recognized.

Posthumous Recognition and Historical Figures

Biden also awarded honors posthumously to four individuals, including Joseph Galloway, a war correspondent known for his Vietnam War coverage, and Louis Lorenzo Redding, a civil rights attorney. Collins Seitz, a Delaware judge, and Mitsuye Endo Tsutsumi, a Japanese-American who challenged wartime internment, were also acknowledged.

The awards continue a tradition established in 1969 by President Richard Nixon, who created the Presidential Citizens Medal to honor significant contributions to society. However, the context and timing of Biden’s selections have amplified partisan divides.

Conservatives Question Biden’s Priorities

As Biden celebrates these honorees, conservatives argue that he has ignored pressing national concerns in favor of symbolic gestures. Critics view the ceremony as a distraction from issues such as inflation, border security, and public safety. Some also see the awards as an attempt to further undermine Trump, who remains a central figure in Republican politics.

With Trump promising to pardon January 6 rioters and vowing to investigate the investigators if reelected, the political tensions surrounding the Capitol riot committee are far from over. Biden’s decision to honor Cheney and Thompson only deepens these divides, setting the stage for ongoing conflict.
