A Pennsylvania man, Jack Danaher Molloy, faces federal charges for allegedly attempting to join Hezbollah—a militant group designated as a terrorist organization by the U.S. Department of State. The Department of Justice (DOJ) announced that Molloy sought to align with the Iran-backed group in order to “kill Jews.” If convicted, he could face up to 20 years in prison for providing material support to terrorism, in addition to eight years for making false statements to federal agents.

Multiple Attempts to Join Hezbollah

Molloy, a 24-year-old dual U.S. and Irish citizen, reportedly traveled to Lebanon and Syria last year in an active effort to join Hezbollah. According to court documents, he first contacted individuals in Lebanon in August 2024, seeking to become a Hezbollah fighter. However, his contacts advised him that it was not the right time and instructed him to take additional preparatory steps.

Later, in October 2024, Molloy traveled to Syria and made another attempt to join the group. Upon returning to the United States, he allegedly lied to FBI agents during questioning at Pittsburgh International Airport, claiming he had no intention of joining Hezbollah and had no business in Syria.

Expressed Antisemitic Beliefs Online

Court records reveal that Molloy expressed hatred toward Jewish people on social media, promoting violence and sharing antisemitic content. He reportedly told a family member about his “master plan” to join Hezbollah and carry out acts of violence against Jewish individuals. Investigators also allege that Molloy visited a website containing information about the possible incarceration location of Robert Bowers, the perpetrator of the Pittsburgh Tree of Life Synagogue shooting in 2018, which claimed 11 lives.

Military Background and Conversion to Islam

Molloy briefly served on active duty in the U.S. Army before his alleged attempts to join Hezbollah. The DOJ also noted that he converted to Islam in 2024, which coincided with his efforts to contact Hezbollah operatives abroad. His dual citizenship enabled him to travel internationally, further aiding his attempts to connect with the militant group.

Potential Penalties

If convicted, Molloy faces serious repercussions. Alongside imprisonment, he could be fined up to $250,000 for making false statements. Authorities continue to emphasize the importance of preventing domestic individuals from aiding terrorist organizations.
