A Byhalia, Mississippi, police officer has been suspended without pay after a high-speed pursuit ended in a crash that killed three people. On Wednesday, the Byhalia Board of Aldermen voted to suspend Officer William Langham following the deadly incident, which occurred on January 4 when Langham chased an SUV outside the city limits. The crash resulted in the deaths of Jaqua Bluiett, 30, Angela Davis, 43, and Michael Crutcher, 63. Another passenger in the pickup truck was injured.
Details of the Incident
The pursuit began within Byhalia but continued over two miles beyond the town's jurisdiction. The fleeing SUV eventually collided with a pickup truck, causing a fiery crash. Eyewitness Taderio Woods, who lives near the crash site, told WMC-TV that he heard a loud boom and rushed outside. He and others attempted to extinguish the fire and help the victims, but it was too late to save those trapped inside.
Langham has denied any wrongdoing. His attorney, Michael Carr, stated that the officer followed proper protocols and did not act illegally. Carr expressed optimism about clearing Langham's name, saying, “We stand behind what he did and look forward to the outcome of the investigation.”
Questions Surrounding the Pursuit
The incident has reignited long-standing concerns about high-speed chases and their risks. Critics argue that the potential dangers often outweigh the benefits of such pursuits. Michael Caradine, a cousin of Michael Crutcher, questioned Langham’s decision to chase the SUV on a narrow, hilly country road. Speaking to WMC-TV, Caradine said, “They should not have been chasing that man. This is a side street with hills. Running 100 miles an hour? Come on.”
Next Steps in the Investigation
Langham will remain suspended while the Marshall County Sheriff’s Office investigates the crash. The investigation aims to determine what prompted the chase and whether it violated local policies.
