- Trump revokes Biden’s access to intelligence briefings, citing concerns over his “poor memory” highlighted in the Hur report.
- Decision marks a break from tradition, as former presidents typically retain access for courtesy and advisory purposes.
- Trump also strips security clearances from 50 former intelligence officials linked to the Hunter Biden laptop controversy.
President Donald Trump announced on Friday that he is revoking former President Joe Biden’s access to intelligence briefings, ending the longstanding tradition of providing classified updates to former presidents. Trump cited claims from a special counsel report that questioned Biden’s ability to handle sensitive information, pointing to his “poor memory” as a key concern.
Trump Ends Biden’s Access to Classified Briefings
In a statement released on Truth Social, Trump declared, “There is no need for Joe Biden to continue receiving access to classified information. Therefore, we are immediately revoking Joe Biden’s security clearance and stopping his daily intelligence briefings.”
This marks a significant shift from usual protocol, where former presidents are granted access to intelligence updates for courtesy and in case sitting presidents seek their advice. Notably, after Trump left office in 2021, Biden himself barred Trump from receiving such briefings, citing concerns over Trump’s “erratic behavior” following the January 6 Capitol riots.

The removal of Biden’s security clearance is not without historical weight. No president before Biden had ever been cut off from intelligence briefings, which are typically seen as a courtesy extended to past leaders. Currently, former Presidents Clinton, George W. Bush, and Barack Obama continue to receive daily intelligence updates.
However, Trump justified the decision by referencing the special counsel Robert Hur’s report on Biden’s handling of classified documents. The report noted multiple instances where Biden, then 81 years old, demonstrated difficulty recalling events during interviews. Hur’s team even noted that Biden “would likely present himself to a jury as a sympathetic, well-meaning, elderly man with a poor memory.”
Biden’s “Poor Memory” Raises Concerns
According to the report, Biden struggled to remember key moments such as his tenure as vice president under Obama or the timing of his son Beau’s death. These findings, Trump argued, make Biden unfit to handle sensitive national security information. “The Hur report revealed that Biden suffers from poor memory and even in his prime could not be trusted with sensitive information. I will always protect our national security,” Trump said.
Trump Targets Former Intelligence Officials
In addition to revoking Biden’s briefings, Trump has also stripped security clearances from roughly 50 former intelligence officials. Shortly after his inauguration, he signed an executive order targeting officials who, in 2020, claimed that the Hunter Biden laptop story was “Russian disinformation.” Trump criticized the letter signed by these officials as “misleading and inappropriate political coordination” with Biden’s campaign.

Although the former officials denied those allegations, saying their letter merely suggested Russia might have been involved in the laptop controversy, Trump’s decision further underscores his ongoing distrust of the intelligence community’s leadership.
What Comes Next?
This bold move raises numerous questions about the future of intelligence-sharing practices and the standards for granting access to national security information to former leaders. Will other former presidents face similar scrutiny in the future?
