A Rhode Island federal judge ruled Monday that the Trump administration violated a court order by freezing congressionally approved funds. U.S. District Chief Judge John McConnell ordered the immediate restoration of funding, citing non-compliance with a temporary restraining order (TRO).

Judge Enforces Court Order Against Funding Freeze

Judge McConnell granted a “motion for enforcement” of the TRO he had issued last month, which blocked President Donald Trump’s nationwide funding freeze. In his ruling, McConnell stated, “These pauses in funding violate the plain text of the TRO.” He directed the federal government to end funding pauses immediately until a decision is made on whether to issue a more permanent preliminary injunction.

The plaintiffs, a coalition of 23 Democratic state attorneys general, filed the motion last Friday, urging McConnell to enforce his earlier TRO. Their legal action initially included states like Rhode Island, Massachusetts, California, and New York, but later expanded to include Arizona, Michigan, and others.

States Demand End to Inflation Reduction Act Freezes
