• Texans are receiving unsolicited packages of invasive seeds mislabeled as items like dog toys, sparking environmental concerns.
  • The seeds, linked to scams from Chinese companies, include harmful species like the Indian lotus.
  • Officials urge recipients to report and avoid planting the seeds to prevent ecological damage.

Texas residents are receiving mysterious packages of unsolicited seeds from China, sparking warnings from state officials to remain cautious. These packages, misidentified as items like dog toys from Chinese retailer Temu, contain invasive plant seeds that could harm the environment and agriculture. State authorities, along with Agriculture Commissioner Sid Miller, are working to investigate and address the issue, which has now resurfaced after a similar incident in 2020.

What’s in the Packages?

According to the Texas Department of Agriculture, one Texan expecting a dog toy instead received seeds accompanied by a liquid substance. Officials identified the seeds as belonging to the invasive Indian lotus, a plant banned in states like Wisconsin due to its potential to cause severe environmental and economic harm. The liquid substance included in one package was likely meant to aid the plant’s growth.

“Without the proper documentation and consent, the shipment did not meet the entry conditions for the United States. We need to close this loophole in our biosecurity protections,” said Sid Miller, Texas Agriculture Commissioner.

A Trend Resurfacing

This isn’t the first time Americans have faced this issue. In 2020, over 20,000 recipients across the U.S. reported receiving similar packages of seeds. The U.S. Department of Agriculture linked the packages to a scam by Chinese companies attempting to inflate sales through fake reviews. Online retailer Amazon even responded by banning the sale of seeds from overseas.

What Should Texans Do?

Authorities are urging Texans to avoid opening or planting unsolicited seeds and to report such deliveries to officials immediately. As the investigation continues, the focus remains on ensuring these potentially harmful packages don’t slip through U.S. Customs again.
