- Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth directed DoD employees to respond to OPM emails listing five weekly accomplishments.
- Initial instructions to ignore Elon Musk's email were reversed to ensure resource efficiency and mission readiness.
- Employees must include their supervisors and submit replies by 11:59 p.m. ET Monday.
A week after the Pentagon directed employees to ignore an email from tech mogul Elon Musk asking them to justify their roles, Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth reversed the decision. On Sunday, Hegseth announced that civilian federal employees must now comply with Musk’s request and report their weekly accomplishments to their supervisors.
New Directive for Civilian Workforce
Hegseth ordered all Department of Defense (DoD) civilian employees to reply to a follow-up email from the Office of Personnel Management (OPM). This email, sent over the weekend, instructed workers to list five key achievements from the prior workweek and copy their immediate supervisors on the response.
“I am now directing each member of the department’s civilian federal workforce to comply with OPM’s email directive,” Hegseth announced on X (formerly Twitter), sharing a video explaining the importance of accountability.
Hegseth emphasized, “Replying to the OPM message ensures that we maximize resources and stay mission-ready.” Employees must complete their responses by 11:59 p.m. ET on Monday.
Background: Initial Resistance
Last week, when Musk sent his first email, the Pentagon advised employees to ignore it. A message from the DoD stated, “The Department of Defense will review the performance of its personnel in accordance with its own procedures.” The memo asked employees to “pause any response” to the email titled “What did you do last week.”

The directive to disregard Musk’s email came amid concerns about security risks. Hegseth and the Pentagon wanted to ensure that replying to Musk’s request or engaging with DOGE did not expose sensitive or classified information.
Why the Change?
Hegseth’s decision to now mandate compliance follows Musk’s insistence on accountability. Musk’s second email, sent Saturday, reiterated his request: “Please reply to this email with approx. 5 bullets describing what you accomplished last week and cc your manager.”
Hegseth noted that this seemingly simple task aligns with the DoD’s mission to minimize waste and optimize efficiency. In his Sunday statement, Hegseth explained, “Elon is right – accountability is essential.”
Employee Accountability in Focus
This move comes as federal agencies, including Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE), face scrutiny over resource allocation. With President Trump emphasizing government efficiency during his administration, Hegseth’s directive aligns with broader calls for fiscal responsibility.
The DoD’s action also reflects a growing trend of using AI and data-driven tools to evaluate employee performance. Musk’s methodology, while unconventional, underscores the importance of productivity in government agencies.
What’s Next?
The Pentagon’s compliance with Musk’s email has sparked debate about workplace efficiency and external influence in federal operations. Critics question the ethical implications of private-sector figures like Musk directing federal employees. Supporters argue that these initiatives push government agencies to adopt modern performance standards.

Why bother… Just fire the ones that told you to ignore Elon… They are the ones that are already in fear of being discovered..
President Trump is trying to reign in out of control spending by the government so as to reduce the massive debt. This forces those riding the gravy train to give some justification for their existence.
