In February, Border Patrol agents apprehended just 8,326 illegal immigrants—a record low that underscores the administration’s aggressive policies. This figure, announced by Donald Trump on social media, marks the lowest number in U.S. history.

“The month of February, my first full month in Office, had the LOWEST number of Illegal Immigrants trying to enter our Country in History – BY FAR!” President Trump proclaimed. This unprecedented drop builds on the administration’s strong border policies, which prioritize detention, expulsion, and prosecution.

The previous record low occurred in April 2017 during Trump’s first term, when about 11,000 illegal immigrants were apprehended. February’s numbers, however, shattered that record, falling below 8,500.

According to border expert Todd Bensman from the Center for Immigration Studies, the decline in illegal crossings disproves claims that “root causes” or external factors are behind migration surges. Bensman explained, “You just detain, expel, deport. That’s it. That’s closing the border. It’s nothing complicated.”

These results challenge assertions made by former Vice President Kamala Harris, who attributed migration to “root causes” in foreign nations, and congressional Democrats, who argued that new legislation was required to address the issue.

Instead, Trump’s approach has relied on existing powers, including declaring a border emergency and pressuring Mexico to help stem the flow of migrants. The administration also designated Mexican cartels as foreign terrorist organizations, enabling the extradition of 29 high-profile cartel leaders.

The Role of Advanced Enforcement Tactics

Through the use of Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE), the administration has implemented advanced tactics to better manage the border. For example, the recent terrorist designation of Mexican cartels led to cooperative actions with Mexico, including the extradition of major cartel figures such as Rafael Caro Quintero and Martin Sotelo.

The Justice Department reported that these extraditions were tied to long-standing requests that had gone unaddressed under the Biden administration. FBI Director Kash Patel stated, “The era of harming Americans and walking free is over.”

From Crisis to Stability

Under President Biden, the U.S. faced its worst migrant crisis in history, with nearly 250,000 illegal immigrants apprehended at the border in December 2023. Many of these individuals were later released into the U.S. However, by the final months of Biden’s term, numbers began to stabilize, with apprehensions dropping to 46,000–58,000 monthly.

After Trump’s return to office in January 2024, these figures fell sharply, reaching fewer than 30,000 in January and then plummeting to about 8,000 in February. This dramatic turnaround highlights the effectiveness of Trump’s policies in restoring border order.

Implications for U.S. Policy

The success of Trump’s border policies debunks the narrative that comprehensive immigration reform is necessary to control illegal migration. Bensman noted, “The immigration system was never broken… All of that stands as totally debunked now.”

Instead of relying on legislation, Trump’s administration used existing tools to curb migration, such as detention and deportation measures and partnerships with foreign governments. These developments suggest that the key to border security lies in enforcement rather than sweeping reforms.
