In a story that sounds straight from a true-crime podcast, an Oahu hiking trail turned into the scene of a chilling incident when Gerhardt Konig, a 46-year-old anesthesiologist, allegedly attacked his wife in a brutal altercation. Konig, now indicted by a grand jury, faces attempted second-degree murder charges following accusations that he assaulted his wife with a rock and syringes. He is currently held without bail at the Oahu Community Correctional Center, according to the Honolulu Prosecuting Attorney’s office. His bail was initially set at $5 million.
“This indictment reflects the serious nature of the crime,” Honolulu Prosecuting Attorney Steve Alm said. “Domestic abuse cannot be tolerated. Our office is committed to ensuring justice for the victim.”
The Attack: A Hike Gone Horribly Wrong
The incident began innocuously when Konig and his wife were hiking on Monday. According to an affidavit presented at Konig’s Thursday hearing, he asked his wife to take a selfie near the edge of the trail. Feeling uncomfortable, she declined and began walking away.

But things escalated quickly. She told police that Konig yelled at her, then pushed her into nearby bushes before allegedly hitting her on the head with a rock multiple times while pulling her hair and smashing her face into the ground. Amid her desperate cries for help, she managed to crawl toward two hikers who heard her screams.
One of the hikers, identified as Amanda, recalled, “I heard someone yelling, ‘Help! Help me!’ and when I got closer, I saw a man on top of her, hitting her in the head.” Amanda described the terrifying moment the victim told her, “He is trying to kill me. He is hitting me in the head with a rock.”
The Victim’s Escape and Rescue
Despite the harrowing attack, the victim managed to break free after Konig allegedly attempted to inject her with syringes he pulled from his bag. With help from the two hikers, she moved up the trail and was eventually met by emergency services.
Police confirmed that the woman suffered head and facial injuries and was transported in serious but stable condition. While the hospital initially did not confirm her admission, police clarified she remains hospitalized as of Friday.
Konig’s Arrest and Suspension
Konig was arrested after a brief foot chase near Pali Highway, more than seven hours after the alleged attack. In the days since, his professional life has unraveled. Konig’s Hawaii medical license—obtained in September 2022—was in good standing as of Tuesday, but authorities have since suspended his privileges at Maui Memorial Medical Center, where he works as an independent contractor.
“Maui Health takes these concerns and the safety of its patients very seriously and will cooperate with authorities as appropriate,” a representative from Maui Health told CNN.

The University of Pittsburgh Medical Center also confirmed Konig previously worked there but left over two years ago.
Domestic Violence and Accountability
This case underscores the pressing issue of domestic violence, even among individuals who may seem successful or respected in public roles. Prosecutor Alm emphasized, “Our office is committed to ensuring that the defendant is held accountable.”
While Konig’s attorney has declined to comment, the allegations paint a bleak picture. It’s a reminder that domestic abuse can hide behind seemingly ordinary relationships.
Heartwarming Hope Amid Darkness
Despite the horror of the attack, this story also highlights the power of strangers stepping in to help. Amanda and Sarah’s decision to act when they heard cries for help likely saved a life. Their bravery serves as a powerful reminder of the difference we can make in someone’s darkest moment.
As the investigation unfolds, let’s hope that justice is served and the victim finds healing and strength moving forward.
