The devastating Covenant School shooting left six people dead and an entire community grappling with grief. Now, two years later, the Metropolitan Nashville Police Department has unveiled its detailed report offering insight into the motives behind the attack. Audrey Hale, a 28-year-old former student, harbored no hatred toward the school or its staff. In fact, investigators revealed that Hale chose The Covenant School for a deeply personal reason: “She wanted to die somewhere that made her happy,” according to the police report.

Hale, who identified as male and used he/him pronouns, attended the private Christian school in the early 2000s. She described her time there as positive, recounting a safe, happy childhood with supportive parents and peers. Yet, more than 16 years after leaving, Hale meticulously planned an attack at her alma mater in pursuit of notoriety. The police report summarized, "Notoriety was the motive. She, like other mass shooters, studied material from Columbine High School prior to committing her attack.”

A Chilling Plan for Infamy

Police uncovered a trove of writings, sketches, and digital files meticulously detailing Hale’s violent plans. The report stated, “She left material behind intentionally to be found and analyzed.” Hale wanted her writings to serve three purposes: documenting her mental health struggles, showing how her mental health aided her in executing the attack, and teaching others how to plan similar incidents.

Included in her notes were morbid ratings of other mass shooters by their death tolls. Hale dismissed those with lower numbers as “amateurs,” though she made exceptions for shooters with severe mental health conditions, whom she regarded as “too sick” to succeed. The report also uncovered a fixation on leaving a legacy. Hale dreamt of her firearms being displayed in a museum and her life story being immortalized in books, documentaries, or movies.

Victims Who Should Never Be Forgotten

On March 27, 2023, Hale took the lives of three 9-year-old children—Evelyn Dieckhaus, Hallie Scruggs, and William Kinney—as well as three school staff members: custodian Mike Hill, head of school Katherine Koonce, and substitute teacher Cynthia Peak. Families of the victims issued a statement reflecting on their loss: “This report summarizes the reality we’ve been living with, that this was truly a senseless crime committed by a deranged, selfish, evil individual who relished the killing of innocent children.”

Eric Osborne, an attorney representing some of the victims’ families, emphasized the importance of privacy regarding the shooter’s writings: “Our legal battle against the public release of the shooter’s evil material is just and appropriate. Please remember that there are real children and families who are suffering and who will never be the same.”

A Complex Mental Health Struggle

Hale’s writings and interviews painted a picture of someone struggling with anxiety, social phobias, and deep feelings of isolation. She reportedly began confiding in stuffed animals, assigning them names and personalities, and even creating art and stories inspired by them. The morning of the attack, Hale left her home with a duffle bag containing firearms, ammo, tactical gear—and her stuffed animals.

The Metro Nashville Police Department report also highlighted Hale’s fixation on creating a “perfect plan.” She transferred her writings onto a thumb drive in the days leading up to the attack, ensuring they would be found and studied.

Finding Meaning Amid Tragedy

Despite the heartbreaking details of this case, Hale’s story is also a stark reminder of the importance of addressing mental health issues. Communities across the country continue to advocate for better resources and intervention strategies to prevent similar tragedies.

Families of the victims shared a poignant message: “No facts can lessen the trauma and grief we have been bearing the past two years. But we hope no one else ever has to go through this.”
