• A maintenance worker at Orleans Parish Jail, Sterling Williams, was arrested for allegedly aiding in the escape of 10 inmates by turning off the water in their cell, enabling their plan.
  • Six inmates remain at large, including Derrick Groves, convicted of a double homicide and facing multiple federal charges; authorities warn he is particularly dangerous.
  • Louisiana State Police captured escapee Gary C. Price, 21, on Monday night, with investigations ongoing to locate the remaining fugitives and prosecute those involved.

A maintenance worker at Orleans Parish Jail has been arrested following the escape of 10 inmates from the facility on Friday. Sterling Williams, 33, faces 10 counts of principal to simple escape and malfeasance in office, according to a statement from Louisiana Attorney General Liz Murrill’s office.

Williams admitted to agents that one of the escapees advised him to turn off the water in the cell where the inmates escaped from,” Murrill stated. “Instead of reporting the inmate, Williams turned off the water, enabling the inmates to carry out their escape plan.”

Williams has been booked into the same Orleans Parish Jail from which he allegedly enabled the escape but will soon be transferred to another facility.

The escape occurred early Friday morning, and by midday Tuesday, six of the inmates remain on the run. Authorities have urged the public to stay vigilant, emphasizing that one of the escapees, Derrick Groves, 27, is considered particularly dangerous. Groves was convicted of killing two men during Mardi Gras 2018 in New Orleans’ Ninth Ward and was awaiting sentencing. Court documents reveal Groves has also been indicted on multiple federal charges, including heroin trafficking, firearms possession for drug trafficking, and obstruction of justice.

The most recent capture occurred Monday night. Gary C. Price, 21, who was awaiting trial on multiple attempted murder counts, was arrested by Louisiana State Police (LSP) in New Orleans East. LSP detectives and a SWAT team carried out the operation, flying Price back to jail by helicopter.

“This is a continuing investigation,” Murrill added. “We will uncover all the facts and prosecute anyone who aided the escape to the fullest extent of the law.” Murrill also encouraged anyone with information or those involved to come forward for leniency.
