A Wisconsin man is in custody after federal officials say he sent a threatening handwritten letter to a U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) field office, vowing to assassinate President Donald Trump. The letter, allegedly written by Ramon Morales Reyes, was received on May 21 and claimed his threats were motivated by the deportation of his loved ones under the Trump administration.

Threat Cited Family Deportations

Reyes, who federal officials say is in the U.S. illegally, wrote in his one-page letter, “You have been deporting my family, and I think it is time Donald J. Trump gets what he has coming to him.” The letter, addressed to an ICE field intelligence officer, also referenced a rifle, stating, “I will see him at one of his big rallies.”

Federal officials arrested Reyes on May 22 in Wisconsin. He is currently being held at Dodge County Jail in Juneau, Wisconsin, awaiting removal proceedings. According to the Department of Homeland Security (DHS), Reyes has been traveling to the U.S. since 1998, though his exact arrival timeline remains unclear.

“This is a serious reminder of the dangers our public figures face in today’s political climate,” DHS Secretary Kristi Noem said in a press release. Noem called for politicians and the media to reduce inflammatory rhetoric, noting prior threats against President Trump, including one less than a year ago in Pennsylvania.

The arrest underscores the ongoing tensions surrounding immigration policies, including deportations under the Trump administration. Immigration remains a deeply polarizing issue in U.S. politics, with lawsuits and allegations of civil rights violations stemming from enforcement practices.

Broader Implications

The incident comes amid heightened political divisions and increasing threats against elected officials. Experts warn that such cases could further inflame debates over immigration enforcement and national security.
