A Milwaukee woman is facing first-degree reckless homicide charges after allegedly shooting her husband during an argument on May 31. Doris Winters, 61, is accused of fatally shooting Aerion Winters, 49, at an apartment complex on Milwaukee’s north side. Authorities say the incident began as a domestic dispute and escalated when Doris Winters retrieved a firearm.

According to the criminal complaint filed in Milwaukee County, police were called to the residence near 95th Street and Brown Deer Road shortly after 10 p.m. on Saturday. Witnesses on the scene identified Winters as the shooter, pointing her out to officers as she walked away from the building. Officers observed her drop a handgun before taking her into custody.

During transport, Winters allegedly admitted to the shooting, stating, “He called me a b— for the last time and I just shot him.” She later told detectives, “I know I shouldn’t have shot him, but I’m just tired.”

Argument Escalated Before Shooting

The complaint details that Aerion Winters had been staying at a separate residence and was driven to the apartment by a witness to retrieve belongings. Upon arrival, the couple engaged in a heated argument. The witness attempted to mediate, standing between the two to de-escalate the situation.

“The defendant picked up a handgun from near a table in the living room, racked the slide, and commented that it was loaded,” the complaint states. After a brief exchange upstairs, the argument resumed when Aerion Winters returned downstairs and allegedly called Doris Winters a derogatory term. Prosecutors allege that Doris Winters, still holding the firearm, fired a single shot into his back while he was turning away.

“The victim collapsed, and the defendant told the witness to ‘get him out of here before I shoot him again,’” the report says. Authorities confirmed that Aerion Winters was pronounced dead at the scene.

Legal Proceedings and Investigation

Doris Winters has been charged with first-degree reckless homicide and use of a dangerous weapon. If convicted, she faces significant prison time. The complaint indicates that she admitted to firing the gun but claimed she did not intend to kill her husband. “I’m just tired,” she reportedly repeated during her police interview.

The Milwaukee Police Department is continuing to investigate the circumstances surrounding the shooting. Officials have not disclosed whether Doris Winters has retained legal counsel. It is also unclear whether members of the couple’s family were present during the incident, apart from the witness mentioned in the complaint.
