The shootings, described by Minnesota Gov. Tim Walz as a “political assassination,” have shocked the state, prompting discussions about public safety and political violence. The victims include Rep. Melissa Hortman, a Democrat and former Speaker of the Minnesota House, and her husband, Mark, who were shot and killed in their Brooklyn Park home early Saturday. State Sen. John Hoffman, also a Democrat, and his wife, Yvette, were injured in a similar attack at their Champlin residence. Hoffman is recovering from surgery, while Yvette is also healing, officials said.

Boelter, who allegedly impersonated a police officer during the attacks, was charged with two counts of second-degree murder and two counts of second-degree attempted murder, according to Hennepin County court records. The manhunt for Boelter, the largest in Minnesota’s history, concluded Sunday evening when he surrendered to law enforcement near his home in Green Isle, Sibley County. Ramsey County Sheriff’s Office confirmed his arrest, sharing a photo of Boelter in custody and labeling him “the face of evil.”

“After relentless and determined police work, the killer is now in custody,” the sheriff’s office wrote. “Justice is one step closer.”

Authorities revealed that Boelter fled the scene of the shootings and managed to evade capture for more than a day, prompting shelter-in-place orders in the northwest metro area. Brooklyn Park police discovered a vehicle resembling a police SUV outside the Hortman residence with emergency lights activated. Boelter allegedly exchanged gunfire with officers before fleeing the scene.

Minnesota State Patrol Lt. Col. Jeremy Geiger said Boelter ultimately surrendered without further incident, crawling toward law enforcement officers to give himself up.
