• Comedian Dave Smith publicly renounced his support for President Trump, criticizing his handling of the escalating Israel-Iran conflict and calling for impeachment. Smith's statements highlight growing divisions within Trump’s base, particularly among libertarians who feel betrayed by his shift away from non-interventionist policies

LOS ANGELES, Calif. — In a sharp reversal Monday, comedian Dave Smith publicly renounced his support for President Trump, describing his endorsement as a “bad calculation” and calling for impeachment. Smith’s condemnation came during an appearance on YouTube’s Breaking Points, where he expressed regret over his decision to back Trump in the 2024 presidential election, citing the president’s controversial handling of escalating tensions between Israel and Iran.

“I supported him last year,” said Smith, a self-described libertarian and frequent guest on The Joe Rogan Experience. “I apologize for doing so. It was a bad calculation. At the time, it seemed like the right one, but his actions now are an absolute betrayal of everything he ran and campaigned on.”

Smith Calls Out Trump’s Foreign Policy Shift

Smith’s criticism targeted President Trump’s response to the recent conflict between Israel and Iran, which erupted following Israel’s “preemptive” strike on Iranian nuclear facilities last week. The military escalation marked the fourth day of hostilities, with Trump maintaining a stance that the U.S. hopes to broker peace between the two nations while also warning of severe retaliation if U.S. interests are attacked.

In a statement posted on Truth Social over the weekend, Trump declared, “The U.S. had nothing to do with the attack on Iran tonight. If we are attacked in any way, shape, or form by Iran, the full strength and might of the U.S. Armed Forces will come down on you at levels never seen before. However, we can easily get a deal done between Iran and Israel and end this bloody conflict!!!”

Smith, however, dismissed Trump’s approach as weak and inconsistent with his prior promises to end “endless wars.”

“Donald Trump telling [Iran] to come back to the negotiating table now is a joke,” Smith said. “It’s like telling FDR after Pearl Harbor to go negotiate with the Japanese. Negotiations are over now.”

A Fractured Coalition?

Smith’s remarks underscore growing divisions among Trump’s base, particularly among libertarians and non-interventionists who had initially supported his 2024 campaign. Critics have accused Trump of abandoning his “America First” foreign policy by hinting at potential U.S. military involvement, a departure from his previous positions on avoiding entanglements in international conflicts.

“Trump is going to lose his coalition over this,” Smith warned. “There are a lot of us that simply will not go along with this.”

While Israel has justified its strikes as necessary to curb Iran’s nuclear ambitions, Tehran has denied allegations of weaponization, claiming its program is purely for peaceful purposes. Meanwhile, Trump continues to position himself as a potential peacemaker, though his critics argue that his rhetoric does little to de-escalate the situation.

Broader Implications for U.S. Policy

The escalating conflict between Israel and Iran has sparked debate across the U.S., including in California, where the state’s significant Iranian-American population has expressed anxieties over the potential fallout. Many Californians are also closely watching how Trump’s response aligns with broader U.S. foreign policy goals amid growing concerns about military intervention in the region.

Smith’s criticism reflects a wider sentiment among those who supported Trump based on his promises of diplomacy and restraint. As the situation unfolds, questions remain about whether his current approach will alienate key segments of his coalition.

What’s Next?

The conflict between Israel and Iran, coupled with the fractures within Trump’s base, raises questions about the future of U.S. foreign policy and domestic political dynamics. Smith’s public shift could signal a broader trend among libertarians and independents who are reconsidering their political allegiances.
