- Five House Republicans have threatened to block a GOP megabill if a controversial public lands sale provision is included. The dispute centers on Sen. Mike Lee's proposal to sell federal lands, which faces opposition from lawmakers in both chambers.
WASHINGTON, D.C. — House Republicans are at odds with Sen. Mike Lee’s (R-Utah) effort to include a provision for selling federal public lands in a GOP megabill, sparking a potential legislative standoff. On Thursday, five House Republicans, led by Rep. Ryan Zinke (R-Mont.), vowed to vote against the bill if it reaches the House floor with the controversial measure intact. The outcome could have significant implications for federal land management and housing policy.
GOP lawmakers push back on public lands sale proposal
Sen. Lee’s proposal, which aims to sell certain public lands for development purposes to address the national housing crisis, has already been narrowed after the Senate parliamentarian ruled earlier language violated reconciliation guidelines. Despite the revisions, opposition remains fierce. “We cannot accept the sale of federal lands that Sen. Lee seeks,” Zinke and four other Western-state lawmakers wrote in a joint statement. “If a provision to sell public lands is in the bill that reaches the House floor, we will be forced to vote no.”
The dissenting representatives—Mike Simpson (R-Idaho), Dan Newhouse (R-Wash.), Cliff Bentz (R-Ore.), and David Valadao (R-Calif.)—represent states with vast federal land holdings and argue the measure would undermine existing public land policies. “Advancing the House Republicans’ legislative agenda on public lands and natural resources, along with using existing law for land disposals, is the correct path forward,” they added.
Senate opposition and broader implications
The measure also faces headwinds in the Senate. Sen. Steve Daines (R-Mont.) confirmed that Senate Republicans have the votes to block the provision if it advances. “We’ve got the votes to strike it,” Daines stated. “We’re ready.”
Lee has defended his proposal as a step toward combating the housing crisis. According to his spokesperson, Lee is committed to working with colleagues to address housing concerns while ensuring affordability for Americans. “Sen. Lee remains committed to working with his colleagues to address the nation’s housing crisis,” the spokesperson said.
What’s next?
With opposition mounting in both chambers, the measure’s inclusion threatens to derail the overall GOP megabill. Lawmakers will need to navigate the dispute to preserve broader legislative priorities. The public is encouraged to share their views as the debate continues.
