In an unprecedented move, Constellation Energy announced on Friday a landmark 20-year agreement to rejuvenate the Three Mile Island nuclear facility, historically known for the United States’ most serious nuclear mishap, by restarting its Unit 1 reactor.
This initiative aims to bring the reactor back to operational status, highlighting its previous record of operating with exceptional safety and reliability standards until its closure due to financial constraints exactly five years prior. Microsoft has stepped in as a significant partner in this endeavor, committing to purchase energy generated from the facility.
This collaboration aligns with Microsoft's ambition to equalize its data centers' electricity consumption with renewable energy sources. The anticipated return of the reactor is set for 2028, awaiting clearance from the U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission.

Constellation Energy's CEO, Joe Dominguez, expressed enthusiasm about revitalizing the plant under a new identity and mission that will bolster Pennsylvania’s economy significantly. Highlighting the plant's historical performance as one of the grid's most dependable and safest nuclear facilities underscores their confidence in its future contributions.
Professor Anna Erickson from the Georgia Institute of Technology emphasized the growing demand for energy driven by advancements in artificial intelligence technology, which necessitates reliable power sources like nuclear energy for continuous operation.
Furthermore, a study initiated by the Pennsylvania Building & Construction Trades Council forecasts substantial economic and employment benefits stemming from the plant’s reopening. An estimated 3,400 jobs are expected to be created directly and indirectly, alongside a considerable injection of up to 837 megawatts of clean electricity capable of supporting over 800,000 homes.
The economic implications extend further with over $16 billion projected towards Pennsylvania’s GDP growth and more than $3 billion anticipated in state and federal tax revenues. It is important to note that Unit 1 was not implicated in the 1979 accident that marked Three Mile Island's history. Upgrades and renovations are planned for key components of the reactor including its turbine, generator among others ensuring renewed operational excellence.
