• Elon Musk’s criticism of Trump’s legislative agenda and his financial backing of anti-Trump candidates, like Rep. Thomas Massie, is escalating tensions within the GOP. This feud is creating significant challenges for Republican leadership as they attempt to rally support for Trump’s key policy initiatives ahead of the 2024 election.

WASHINGTON, D.C. (TDR) — Elon Musk’s feud with President Trump is shaking up Republican leadership and legislative priorities as both sides dig in. Musk, the world’s richest man, escalated his criticism of Trump’s marquee legislative package, the One Big Beautiful Bill Act, while signaling he will fund primary challenges to Republicans who back the sweeping policy proposal.

Musk’s latest move? Publicly backing Rep. Thomas Massie (R-Ky.), a vocal libertarian critical of Trump’s spending plans. On X (formerly Twitter), Musk confirmed he would support Massie’s campaign against Trump-backed opponents, saying simply, “I will.” Meanwhile, Trump allies are doubling down on efforts to oust the seven-term congressman, launching a MAGA super PAC aimed at flipping his Kentucky district.

Musk vs. Trump: A GOP Divide

The tension between Musk and Trump has been mounting for weeks. Musk has called the One Big Beautiful Bill Act “utterly insane” and accused Republicans of abandoning fiscal conservativism. “Every member of Congress who campaigned on reducing government spending and then voted for this massive debt increase should hang their head in shame,” Musk said in a recent X post. Sources close to Musk have confirmed that his financial support for anti-Trump candidates could reach millions.

Trump isn’t backing down. In a statement on Truth Social, Trump labeled Massie a “Third Rate Congressman” and boasted that any candidate he endorses will easily defeat him. The president has also accused Musk of opposing the bill out of personal financial interest, citing provisions to cut green energy subsidies and Biden-era electric vehicle mandates. “Elon gets more subsidies than anyone in history. Without them, he’d be back in South Africa,” Trump told reporters on Tuesday.

Strategic Stakes for House Republicans

For House Republicans, the Musk-Trump feud couldn’t come at a trickier time. Leadership offices are scrambling to unite the conference around Trump’s legislative agenda while managing deep fissures within the GOP. The One Big Beautiful Bill Act, a cornerstone of Trump’s domestic policy, has faced resistance from fiscal hawks like Massie, complicating Speaker Mike Johnson’s effort to secure votes.

One senior GOP aide told The Dupree Report, “Musk’s involvement is throwing gas on the fire. Leadership is already balancing a slim majority and internal divisions, and now we have to deal with primary threats bankrolled by one of the richest men in the world.”

The timing is critical. House committees are set to mark up key portions of the bill next week, with leadership aiming for a floor vote by the end of the month. Procedural hurdles remain, particularly in the Senate, where Majority Leader Chuck Schumer has vowed to block the package in its current form.

Massie, for his part, appears unfazed by Trump’s attacks. The Kentucky Republican has positioned himself as a principled fiscal conservative, opposing both Trump’s coronavirus relief package in 2020 and recent U.S. military actions in Iran. In a statement to reporters, Massie defended his opposition to the One Big Beautiful Bill Act, saying, “This bill is a massive debt bomb. I won’t vote for something that mortgages our future.”

Massie’s reelection prospects remain strong despite Trump’s efforts. In 2024, he defeated two primary challengers with 76% of the vote. Still, the new MAGA super PAC, led by Trump campaign insiders Chris LaCivita and Tony Fabrizio, is pouring resources into unseating him. “We’re confident that Kentucky voters will choose a candidate who’s loyal to President Trump’s vision,” LaCivita said.

What’s Next for Musk and Trump?

The battle between Musk and Trump is far from over. Sources close to Musk say he’s prepared to expand his political involvement, targeting not just Trump allies but also Democrats who support the One Big Beautiful Bill Act. On the other hand, Trump is leveraging his influence over the GOP base to rally support for his policy priorities and punish dissenters.

As the showdown unfolds, the broader stakes for Republicans are clear: Can the party navigate internal divisions while advancing Trump’s legislative agenda? Or will high-profile feuds like this one derail their efforts in a critical election cycle?

The Musk-Trump clash isn’t just political theater—it’s a test of GOP unity and the future of its legislative strategy. Who will emerge victorious, and what does it mean for the broader Republican agenda?
