• President Trump condemned a controversial new Democratic proposal that would prohibit ICE and CBP agents from wearing masks and require visible identification, warning it would endanger law enforcement. Senators Cory Booker and Alex Padilla claim the bill increases accountability, but Trump called the move reckless, dangerous, and rooted in anti-American sentiment.

WASHINGTON, DC (TDR)President Trump launched a scathing rebuke of a Democrat-backed bill that would prohibit federal immigration officers from concealing their identities, calling the legislation “dangerous” and accusing its sponsors of endangering national security for political gain.

During a lunch with African leaders on Wednesday, President Trump addressed the Visible Identification Standards for Immigration-Based Law Enforcement (VISIBLE) Act, introduced this week by Sens. Cory Booker (D-NJ) and Alex Padilla (D-CA). The legislation would mandate that Customs and Border Protection (CBP) and Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) agents wear clearly visible identification and prohibit them from wearing face coverings during operations.

Trump didn’t hold back. “They wouldn’t be saying that if they didn’t hate our country,” the president said after Fox News reporter Peter Doocy raised the issue. “These officers are doing a tremendous job…you put them in tremendous danger.”

Trump went on to describe the legislation as a thinly veiled attempt to weaken law enforcement amid escalating violence and organized resistance against ICE and CBP across the country.

Booker and Padilla Defend Bill Amid Mounting Backlash

The VISIBLE Act was pitched by Booker and Padilla as a response to recent public complaints over the presence of federal officers operating in unmarked uniforms. Booker claimed the bill would combat “fear in communities” and reduce impersonation threats.

“For weeks, Americans have watched federal agents with no visible identification detain people off the streets,” Booker said. “The lack of uniform standards…has stoked fear and undermined trust.”

But critics say the legislation fails to account for the escalating threats against federal officers. According to Department of Homeland Security (DHS) sources, ICE and CBP personnel have faced multiple ambushes in recent weeks, including a coordinated attack on the Fourth of July in Alvarado, Texas, where armed rioters used fireworks to lure agents into gunfire. Ten suspects were charged in the plot.

Citing that July 4 ambush, Trump said the push to expose agents’ identities is reckless and likely to embolden violent anti-government elements.

“You look at the guns they had — brand new. You look at the clothing — straight out of a military shop,” Trump said. “You’ve got some very stupid people on the left funding this. And if anything happened, they’d be the first to go.”

The president also noted that officers often wear masks for personal safety — both to shield their identities from criminal organizations and to protect their families.

“Democrats don’t seem to care when masked protesters burn down cities,” Trump said. “But when an ICE officer wears a mask to protect himself, suddenly it’s a problem.”

Riots, Rhetoric, and the Politics of Immigration Enforcement

The controversy over federal immigration enforcement has intensified in recent months. In June, mass ICE raids in Los Angeles sparked widespread protests and violent riots. Local leaders condemned Trump’s immigration policies, even as DHS officials warned of growing threats to agent safety.

“The left’s anti-ICE rhetoric is directly fueling this violence,” said Jessica Vaughan, director of policy studies at the Center for Immigration Studies. “Calling for agents to be visibly identifiable while ignoring the security risks is pure political posturing.”

In Portland, Oregon, protesters recently clashed with ICE personnel following Trump’s signing of what he dubbed the “big beautiful bill”, which ramped up immigration enforcement nationwide.

“They’re patriots,” Trump said of federal agents. “They deserve protection, not exposure.”

Political Fallout and National Implications

Public opinion appears to be on Trump’s side. A July Rasmussen poll found that 62% of likely voters believe ICE and CBP officers should be allowed to conceal their identities during high-risk operations. Only 28% supported mandatory visible identification.

Constitutional law experts are also weighing in. “There’s a strong argument that this legislation infringes on operational security and officer safety,” said attorney Hans von Spakovsky of the Heritage Foundation. “Congress has oversight, but micromanaging federal officers’ gear crosses a dangerous line.”

As the 2026 midterms loom, the divide between security and transparency is poised to be a defining issue.
