- North Korean leader Kim Jong Un pledged “unconditional support” for Russia’s war in Ukraine, signaling deepening military ties and escalating geopolitical tensions. The move comes amid reports of North Korean troops in Ukraine and Russia's continued drone and missile attacks across Ukrainian cities, intensifying concerns from Western observers.
WONSAN, North Korea (TDR) — In a meeting that further solidifies a growing geopolitical alliance, North Korean leader Kim Jong Un on Saturday reaffirmed his “unconditional support” for Russia’s military efforts in Ukraine, according to North Korean state media KCNA.
The declaration came during a summit with Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov, who spent three days in North Korea to strengthen the strategic relationship between the two regimes. Lavrov, quoting Kremlin officials, characterized the partnership as “an invincible fighting brotherhood,” a sentiment echoed by Kim as he pledged continued support for Russian President Vladimir Putin’s actions in Ukraine.
Deepening Military Collaboration Raises Global Alarms
While Moscow and Pyongyang have long shared mutual disdain for the West, their collaboration has evolved from rhetorical alignment to direct military cooperation. Reports from South Korean and U.S. intelligence sources indicate that more than 10,000 North Korean troops have been deployed to aid Russia in Ukraine, marking one of the most overt foreign interventions in the conflict.
“Kim Jong Un reaffirmed that the DPRK is ready to unconditionally support and encourage all the measures taken by the Russian leadership as regards the tackling of the root cause of the Ukrainian crisis,” KCNA wrote in its summary of the meeting.

North Korea’s involvement has not come without consequences. Though unverified by independent media, Pyongyang has reportedly lost hundreds of troops in combat—a grim indicator of how deeply invested the country has become in the outcome of the war.
Lavrov, in turn, reportedly thanked Kim for the troop deployment, underscoring a new level of openness between the two countries rarely seen in past decades. Western analysts say this sets a dangerous precedent in international warfare, where authoritarian regimes not only trade arms but now deploy soldiers to conflicts far outside their borders.
Ukraine Under Fire Amid Shifting Alliances
The summit coincided with another brutal night in Ukraine, where Russia launched over 600 drones and missiles, according to Ukraine President Volodymyr Zelensky.
“The Russians are intensifying terror against cities and communities to increasingly intimidate our people,” Zelensky said on X (formerly Twitter).
“But despite Moscow's plans, the air defense forces are achieving good results.”
Ukraine’s Air Force confirmed that 319 Iranian-made Shahed drones and 25 missiles were intercepted overnight, though some managed to hit five key locations across the country. The Institute for the Study of War called it the third such mass-scale combined strike in July alone, highlighting Russia’s aggressive campaign to wear down Ukrainian morale and infrastructure.
Strategic Fallout for the West
The growing alliance between North Korea and Russia now poses a more complicated challenge for U.S. and NATO planners. It also raises concerns among Pacific allies, including South Korea and Japan, who worry about regional spillover from North Korea’s increasingly bold military operations.
Experts say this unusual east-to-west military coordination could reshape the landscape of international conflict, linking rogue nations through shared grievance and anti-West ideology more than geographical proximity.

For Kim Jong Un, the alliance represents a rare diplomatic victory—an opportunity to elevate North Korea’s global standing without having to engage directly with the West. For Putin, it’s another avenue for manpower and political backing as Russia's war stretches into its third year with no resolution in sight.
As authoritarian regimes draw closer in defiance of international norms, the global community is left to ask: Are we entering a new era of conflict shaped not just by borders, but by shared enemies? Let us know what you think in the comments and share your thoughts.
