In an unprecedented move, Lyle and Erik Menendez are set to feature in a forthcoming Netflix documentary, voicing their discontent with a currently streaming series on the same platform that they argue grossly misrepresents them.

Tami Menendez, Erik's spouse, conveyed her husband's disapproval of the depiction in "Monsters: The Lyle and Erik Menendez Story," which has climbed to the top spot among Netflix shows in the United States. As reported by the Hollywood Reporter, this true-crime saga suggests an incestuous bond between the siblings, including a contentious scene of them kissing in the shower. Erik denounced these portrayals as stark fabrications and harmful mischaracterizations, especially against Lyle, who had confessed to molesting Erik during their 1995 retrial.

Erik lamented over how easily a single influential figure could derail hard-won advancements in bringing childhood trauma to light, labeling it as "disheartening slander." The prosecution painted the brothers as entitled youths seeking to inherit their parents' wealth; however, the Menendez brothers have consistently maintained that they were driven to murder José and Mary Louise "Kitty" Menendez due to enduring physical, emotional, and sexual abuse over many years. Highlighting their abuse claims, they presented a letter written eight months prior to the murders where Erik expressed his dread of his father's nighttime visits.

Adding credibility to their allegations of abuse, former Menudo member "Roy" Rossello Diaz accused José Menendez of drugging and assaulting him when he was younger. Both Netflix and Ryan Murphy Productions have yet to respond to these accusations.

In response to this controversy, Netflix announced on Monday its plan to release "The Menendez Brothers," slated for October 7. This documentary promises viewers a novel understanding of the notorious trial through direct narratives from Lyle and Erik themselves—marking their first extensive public commentary in three decades. Directed by Alejandro Hartmann, this series aims to shed new light on a well-known case by incorporating audio interviews with the brothers alongside insights from legal experts, journalists, jurors, and relatives.
